I got into an argument with my friend on this. I definately believe Claypool is better. IMHO, the only reason everyone thinks Flea is so good is because he's the only mainstream bassist who goes out of the norm. What do you guys think? |

I can't say thet Claypool is "better" but I would rather listen to him.
I have also never been subjected to Les Claypool playing naked.

Flea plays with the RHCP which is not focused mainly on bass and has a different style than Claypool who plays in ensembles that focus on bass.

Imean, afterall, hes plying LEAD Bass and Traditional bass at same time pretty much:P |

He found a way to make his slap songs melodic something I don't really think Claypool did that very much. Claypool style was also very sloppy. Both of them are very innovative, but I really picked Flea just because he made songs that every could like and Claypool fan base is more select(I'm not saying tahts a bad thing)
EDIT: Something was wrong with my computer and I only saw the first two options. Now I see the other options and I would have voted Music is art, to choose either is purely preference, but I never saw that. |

He's the most overrated bassist of all time. I'm sorry, the man sounds like **** people. Before you get upset that I say this, know that I have only listened to 2 chili peppers cd's, but I heard them all the way through. It seems to me like flea just takes a basic unimpressive riff and slaps it so it makes everyone say ooo and ah. This is only my opinion though, but I just can't get into his music.
Les Claypool is innovative and makes music the way he thinks it sounds good rather than how everyone wants to hear it. It's all about expression!!! If you don't like the sound of primus don't dismiss him. His new stuff is moving away from what primus has done. Everyone should atleast listen to Of Whales and Woe, Brown album, Sailing the Seas of cheese, or atleast some of his jammier stuff. His music covers a wider spectrum of styles than flea (from what i've heard).
If you like looking at naked guys I guess that's cool, if that's what you like, but i'd much rather see some sort of crazy midieval alien costume with horns all sorts of tripped out stuff. That's just me though.
I'm not dismissing Flea either though, I need to look further into it before I can say he is unskilled
How is Les' music have less diversity in their fan base? His music covers more variety and all the flea i've heard sounds the same or boring to me. How is his playing sloppy, because he didn't model it perfectly after what somebody else wants to see? I won't argue that he's the most skilled bass player, but he stands for what music should be about, and saying that a certain "genre" of people only listen to him is rediculous because he doesn't cater to styles. If you have some moshing scene in your head then you're in the past, that group of fans is what made les rethink his style and what music is about, not to mention he stopped playing with primus because he was tired of playing hard music just because it's what his fans want to see.

Of course I chose LES CLAYPOOL! There is noone else like him! IMO Flea can't even compare to Claypool, but im not saying Flea isn't great, don't misunderstand me, but Les is just.... well he's just Les.

| I would have voted for this were it an option! You would have to be without common sense to vote for anything besides that. Who thinks music isn't art? Who thinks people shouldn't listen to music of their preference???
That just screwed up the polls man. And how did it get 500 votes in that little of time?
Don't add in options after you already start the poll. Not to mention the poll is flea vs claypool

but being unique counts for a lot so Claypool over Flea
I also find Flea's behavior repugnant
none (in this list) can compare to the groundbreaking work and spirit of Jaco's music or the fresh flavor of hand-picked carrots

He plays with a band, and he sounds good with said band.
There are alot of songs by Claypool that are basically him making up a bass line, and his band playing around him.
I love Claypool ,don't get me wrong. But there's more to a bassist than technique.

Go to some les shows and you'll agree the band doesn't just play around him but they do their part and add in their own unique flavor, or else it would be pointless for him to have so many damn side projects!
