whos better whos best who decides?

a friend mentions to me that he had read an article about flea and that he is a very good bassists - i reply well yeah hes pretty good but overrated.
i say to my friend i could name you 50 bassist you never heard of that could blow flea out of the water (thinking Jaco, Wooten, Miller, Sheehan, Hamm, Pattitucci etc.).
so my friend says well how do you know that? after struggling to explain about technique, innovation, style etc. i gave up.
so my question here is how can we really say one bass player is better than another. i mean all we can judge flea on is his playing in RHCP - how do we know he isnt capable of playing much more. how do we know myung wouldnt play with more "feeling" outside of DT?

please help!!!
