Who's Overrated? Who's Underrated?

I'm sure this has been done before, but why not...

Let's hear it.

3 guys who kill but never got the deserved recognition.

3 guys who blow yet people adore. (And not just idiots in popular bands, but guys who bassists genuinely love, but you don't get why).

My choices of underrated greats --

Gary Thain.

Wild, reckless hard rock basslines that are both solid and surprising.

Glen Cornick.

Tull's first bassist who played great parts, fills and one of the most musical bass solo's ever recorded.

John Onder.

He only recorded a couple of things -- one being Joey Tafolo's Infra Blue and he is ridiculous -- kinda Like Billy Sheehan but with better chops.

3 most overrated.

John Patitucci.

Yeah, I get it -- he has insane skill. Great upright player too. Amazing facility. He just does nothing for me. No groove, no heart, no nothing. Lots of notes.

John Entwistle.

I like him! He's good! But I don't hear what's so amazing.

Carol Kaye.

For all her legendary status, I've never heard anything that stands out as particularly great . Most of her stuff was written out for her. And "The Beat Goes On is cute -- but, come on).

Who'd I miss?

Hmmm, views but no comments.

Maybe I should have said Marcus Miller. That might get a few people riled.

I'm sorry to say but, as great as he is, it's always the same thing. And Louis Johnson had already done it better.

Yeah I thought about posting but I didn't want to start a flame war. I agree completely with your overrated list, though. I was going to say that Claypool is vastly underrated, but only as a singer and songwriter. Way too many people focus exclusively on his bass playing, which is a shame.

Ha! it's only a flame war if people start insulting each other. It's okay to say that someone's style doesn't hit you -- and why.

Okay, since I'm apparently just amusing myself until someone jumps in...

Also underrated...Greg Lake. Also overrated...Will Lee.

I'm not sure why you want to get people riled! But so far I disagree 100% with you overrated list.

That's cool. It's interesting how people hear and see things differently.

I like bass players who play songs. Guys like Wooten, Sheehan, etc., just don't move me. Sure they good technicians but that just isn't enough for me. Kim Deal impresses and moves me more than someone who is all technique. Again, this is what I like and I'm not trying to put anyone down who likes those guys.

You're absolutely right about Fieldy. I don't get his playing or tone.

As much as the bass community hates him, I don't even think of him as overrated anymore lol. I respect him a lot for being different. Not only does he have a completely unique (borderline ridiculous) sound, he developed an original slap technique. If I remember correctly he slaps by alternating between his thumb and pinkie.

3 most underrated:

Rick Anderson - The Tubes - Check out the "Completion Backward Principle", especially "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman".

Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath - "Paranoid", especially "Fairies Wear Boots". Great mix of metal and funk.

Muzz Slillings - Living Colour - Listen to the "Vivid" CD. Great mix of hard rock and funk.

It's the same riff looped four times. So, even though you are mistaken you are still correct in asking. It's not a 1:20 riff/solo it's a :30 riff/umm...."solo".

Im not the fan of Korn so I dont really know,But on a first listening, it just sounded like a couple second riff played over and over with some fills every so often. Whatever it is on paper, it was lame in the real world.
