| | | | +1 All I can say is that I missed Tom Barney A LOT when I saw them with Ready Freddie. He's obviously a great player, but IMO not the best fit for that band and that music. He didn't really 'push' the band like Barney. IMO. Tom Barney just KILLED that gig. Freddie sounds very nice on the 'Morph the Cat' CD though.
I saw him twice, and both times, his bass was a muddy mess out front, versus Barney's beautiful, full, wide, clear tone.

The band as a whole sounded great- and Donald and Walter were in great form. Freddie is great for that band because he doesnt overplay- just contsantly provides a great foundation thru his P bass/ Aguilar setup... He grooved well w/ Keith Carlock (wicked drummer) all evening!

Barney and Dennis Chambers with the Dan was REALLY something to see! That section is on the 'Live in America' or whatever that live CD is that came out a while ago, and also a few cuts with Peter Erskine. |

He's also noted as playing "I'm Going To Make You Love Me", in James Jamerson Standing...book, in one take. He's plays in the tradition of most R&B players...funky and grooving. "It's Alright to Groove."

I hold many of those bass parts (especially some of Rainey's work) as kind of 'holy', and Barney just did a much better job of, while not totally copying all those wonderful parts, at least 'respecting them' and also giving the band a bit of a 'push'. I just didn't hear that with Freddie. Pure IMO there... again, it's not like he folded or anything.

And +11111111 on Keith Carlock.
He did get the biggest response from the crowd as well.
BTW, for you Detroit guys. SD will be at MGM (I think) sometime in Sept.

Anyway, being myself a great SD fan I love any bassist who played with them...Tom Barney's performance on "Alive In America" is amazing, and also Anthony Jackson's on "Glamour Profession"...but my favorite Dan bassist is Chuck Rainey!!
Anyway, Freddie Washington IMO fits perfectly for Steely Dan...
I read that Fagen wanted him to play for them since a longtime, after Tom Barney left the band... |

I checked out Tom Barney (Alive in America) after reading Jung's comments- TB is stellar for sure! I also really like what Rainet did on Aja also. Going to see them was a treat- and Freddie was cool.
Ill have to get the 'Nightfly' trilogy soon... Ive only heard a few things but all of that was great |

Carlock on drums is absolutely killer.
