Who's sound made you want to try the bass?

For me its Dusty Hill and ZZ top, at the age of ten. It was probably the first time I ever really noticed the bass. Wondering if anyone else can remember the first time a bass tone struck them.

Flea.
Opening bars to Higher Ground. I went to my music teacher and asked her to tell me what instrument it was, and then to start teaching me.

Steve Harris on The Clairvoyant and These Colours Don't Run. That sound was what I wanted to do, and 3 years on form hearing them, I can just about get there.

Ah, I remember it well.. It was John Paul Jones and the tune was When The Levee Breaks..

There were others that sparked my interest in bass playing. Rob Wright, Jamerson, Colin Moulding, Bruce Thomas, Norman Watt Roy to name a few. But I was destined to play bass after hearing JPJ..

Having my first decent home record player may have been part of it, but it was when I heard McCartney's low notes cutting through the mix on the early Beatles records.

Flea's intro to Around the World sparked my first interest in bass.

Geezer Butler on War Pigs.

The whole thing scared the crap out of me. 37 years later and I'm still hooked!

actually, my junior high band director "made me" play bass, at age 13 (and I'm forever grateful), so there was no point when I heard a bassist and decided to play bass. At the time, I was listening to Chicago a lot, so I guess Peter Cetera's lines were the first bass influence. Listened to Chris Squire a lot at the time, too. And Entwistle. Not too much later, I started listening to a lot of fusion, so then it was all Jaco & Stanley.
