then he just gave it up after a while, and just went with the natural croat way of spelling it.

It was like he just checked-off "be in a world famous band" from his to-do list and went on to the next thing. As opposed to Grohl who went on to form Foo Fighters and is much respected by musicians and possibly even more so now than when he was in Nirvana.
The fact that Novoselic is spending more time in politics than music now would seem to indicate that perception was correct.
There's really no reason he should be disrespected for it but I think it may be part of it. |
I disagree. Kurt and krist where together everyday pretty much for a decade, kurt got him playing bass , he played and jammed with kurt for 10 years. They were probably as close as you can get to someone. Losing kurt was a big deal for him , alot of bands lose members but thse bands want success and all that crap.Nirvana was never wanting to be succesful , when krist lost kurt i think he lost he drive for awhile. I think he didnt really feel like making music with anyone else, so he left the spotlight for awhile. He had a love for politics and took that up on his own, he has made some music in bands like flipper but i bet there is not a day that goes by that krist doesnt think back about kurt. Its sad really , suicide is just messed up because yeah its over for you but so many people suffer daily that you gone and the way you left. |

i always thought he was a great bassist, was a big influence on me about 17 years ago, when i started. some great rolling, tuneful lines. |

However, I wouldn't go so far as to call Krist (or Kurt, for that matter) musicians musicians. Neither were particularly accomplished at their particular instruments. What worked was the song writing.
People often make the mistake of suggesting just because a bassist "plays what's appropriate for the song" they're good. However that's simply not a completely true statement. It's not about how many or how few notes he played but the way he played them. His style is indistinct, and his technique is awful. Slinging the bass that low actually works against the muscles and tendons and has led to tendinitis in many people. I'm sure he did it to look cool.
I like Nirvana for the songs - they were catchy, they spoke to me, and restored my faith (albeit temporarily) in modern rock music given where the industry was just before Nirvana took the scene by storm and changed radio. I'm also of the opinion that none of that has to do with quality of musicianship.

Krist played what Nirvana needed, Hoppus plays what Blink needs. If you're just listening to "All the Small Things" I can see the Hoppus criticism, but it's ignoring stuff like "I'm Lost Without You" off the self-titled CD. Not complex, but tasteful and fitting with the song.
I like Krist's playing. I think he's been overshadowed by the other members of Nirvana, but he added something important to the band, even without recognition for it.

NO! was he good? YES! no matter what his band will be in the hall of fame and barring any unfortunate circumstances im sure he's got $$$ for life...not bad for a garage band bass player
PS check out the band EYES ADRIFT. krist novecelic and bud gaugh (ex sublime drummer) project.
