Why does no one ever seem to mention Michael Manring?

In all of the lists of best bassists and like, it seems like no one even mentions Michael Manring. Why not? I see the guy as a modern Jaco to be honest. He's got the same talented ear for quality sounds, if you know what I mean.

He's mentioned around here quite a bit, actually.

He's awesome, but I think we all like to learn what people are playing. Changing tunings 20+ times in a song makes that tough. Took me a wile to learn "long hair mobile" Watson and crick is just retarded.

I agree, I think he's one of the most talented musicians I've ever seen, not just amongst bassists.

But if you look at the guys who are often mentioned amongst the greats it's usually commercially successful rock/pop type players (Flea,Geddy,JPJ etc), studio greats (Jamerson,Dunn,Kaye, etc) or fusion technique monsters (Wooten,Berlin,Gwizdala).

Manring doesn't fit into that mold at all. His music is borderline at times too New Agey and just too out there for most people. He doesn't have any high profile sidework or something that a new player can really latch onto. Even a kid who just picked up a bass can learn the main lick to "Sinister Minister" or some Jamerson lines (obviously not note for note, but they can pick up the general idea). Manring doesn't have that equivalent.

That's akin to no one mentioning Gary Grainger. Bassist have played on many tours, cuts and with well known respected artist/employers.

For me I think he has cool style and I love the Stingray bass sound!! All you old heads understand this.

BKBassDude hit it, i think. Manring is amazing and ground-breaking, but he's not "commercial" at this juncture, which translates into an unfortunate lack of above-radar visibility on a scale larger than a great informed cult status.
However, IF he suddenly got hooked up with, say, a G3-style big-exposure arena tour, he'd be "discovered" by all the young cats in a second.

Because he's so good. People tend to like bassists they relate to. If you're a Geddy fan, you probably dedicated some time learning some Rush. If you're a Jaco fan, you can probably play some of his stuff. If you're a Manring fan, good luck with all that, because no one can do what he does.
