I was just watching a Tal Wilkenfeld and Oteil clip on youtube and I just realized that I think I would appreciate Oteil's playing much more without the scatting. I saw him around 17 years ago with the Aquarium Rescue Unit and he was doing the same thing. No disrespect intended, he can certainly play and, of course, this solely my opinion. Anyway, I couldn't even make it through the 4 minute clip.

Only a very few people can pull this off well.. I've seen a lot of videos of bass players doing this into a mic and, if there is no mic available, they make sure to do it loud enough so everyone can hear.
The only bass player that I've heard do it really well, so far, is Richard Bona because he is actually playing what he is singing and (wait wait wait) ITS IN TUNE!.. I guess I'm missing the boat but I dont see what the point of doing this is if you can't sing what you are playing in tune. Other person I'd add to this list is Charlie Hunter because he's not just singing, he is harmonizing with his voice while playing the melodies, chords, and bass line..
Just my $0.02.. |

| | | | It'd be much more tolerable if it were in small doses, but he insists upon inundating his solo spots with it. I lose interest very quickly with it.
Dude can jam though, no doubt about it. |
