Is Will Lee really any good? Or his he just some bass player that is decent enough to get by and somehow got an endorsement with Sadowsky. Can anyone please point me in the right direction? |

Check this out from his Beatles Tribute band The Fab Faux: Abbey Road (Side 2)
Oh yeah, and he can sing really well too!

Just check out Chaka Khan's - 'I'm Every Woman' and The Brecker Brothers - 'Skunk Funk' to hear the grooves and ideas. And then go to Youtube and dig it. Look for a version of 'Teen Town' with Will and Darryl Jones playing in unison.
And once again - Will Lee is REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYYY good. Nobody lasts four decades as a first call session player in New York just by being decent enough.

Dude has an impressive commercial ad resume (sings as well), jazz and pop record history and has one of the most coveted gigs in television.
Yeah, he can play! |

Will is a pillar of the bass community at large and has been for nearly four decades. He was and is the most in demand session man in ultra-competitive NYC since his arrival there in the seventies, as well as holding down the bass chair for David Letterman for close to 30 years. He's also very much in demand as a session vocalist, and has a permanent spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band. Will has played with everybody, everywhere on every stage imaginable. He's also a Grammy winner and plays in the arguably best Beatles cover band there ever was, the Fab Faux.
Several generations of bassists now hold him in the highest regard. As for the Sadowsky thing, he's been working with those guys for decades as well. Will's career is hardly a fluke. http://www.willlee.com/discography.php

| | | | Okay, thank you very much everything. I'm sorry if I came off as a complete idiot, but really I did, haha. I'm a fairly new bassist and really just beginning to learn more bass players. I know the obviously ones, but still I've got a lot of people to research...Will Lee is one of them. Again, thank you for all the help. |

I think WIll Lee is the consummate pro. Solid player. Good time, good skill, good ears, good feel. Sings well too.
However...
I don't think he does anything that a few thousand other guys do as well. And I'm not just talking about chops.
The guy's done hundreds of records but I can't think of one track that is anything special. (Copying McCartney's lines doesn't count).
He's a real good player who got off on the right foot , made the right contacts and parlayed it into amazing career. It is't ALL luck. But it is in part.
At least, that's how I see it. |

Still, Will Lee is fantastic at playing what a track needs. The fact that he has it done time and again in pressure recording situations says he has a very rare set of skills.
Personally, when I think of Will Lee, I think of his super funky Seventies playing, especially him slapping with a flanger on his P-bass.

At least, that's how I see it. | I've never heard Will Lee play anything that wasn't in the best interest of the song; he manages to demonstrate his musicianship in everything he does, and his gigantic ears and abundant chops enable him to play anything in which he has an interest at a highly professional level.
What I've never seen him do is act unprofessionally. And despite the fact that he's no wallflower, he allows his playing to speak for itself. Some folks may confuse the absence of grandstanding with lack of ability. But, IMHO, that would be as big an error as mistaking kindness for weakness.
I admire his musicianship, his professionalism, and his maturity. |

| | C'mon man! | | Join Date: Dec 1999 Location: Hawaii | | | A career of almost forty years in NYC is not luck! He's been at the top of his game for a very long time in a very tough business. To me, Will Lee is the epitome of what it is to be a great professional bassist.

His cartage (his gear trunks) was late so he grabbed a bass off the studio wall to cut the first track. He had to bend the strings into to tune to compensate for the bad setup / wonky neck.
To me, this story really exemplifies (even if it's not true) what it takes to be a top tier pro - flexibility, creativity, confidence and enthusiasm to get the job done and done right - with a minimum of ego.
All hail Will!
