I really am enamored with the tone he has on the Standing In The Shadows Of Motown book/cd when he plays Gladys Knight's version of Grapevine...

Anyone know what he used to record that particular track? Sadowsky? Great fingerstyle tone...could be a jazz with the tone way down?

I plan on digging further into his tone and any recommendations on great tunes he plays on is appreciated...

Mark

GK head - Hartke 4x10 - sadowsky bass - certeainly plucking the string near the bridge to get more punchy sound . if you get a good jazz bass try set down a bit the neck pickup put the bridge pickup all the way up and turn down a bit the tone and your sound will be close to is sound i gess

Will has a tone of basses.
He may have used a Fender P-Bass for that track.
Will now plays a Sadowsky Sig. Model.
And endorses Ampeg amps.

It makes sense that he would play a P for a jamerson tribute(I think he plays a ric for the fab faux stuff)..Just love how clear yet fat his tone is on Grapevine..

And yes, I know his fingers matter a lot in the equation

The picture in the book shows him atop a pile of basses, including a P bass (with an EMG that looks like a J PUP in the bridge). It was recorded at his own home studio, so I'd bet he went direct, even though at the time he TV rig was the GK/Hartke stuff. Could be anything on the recording.

BTW, Will also played the drums on that track with Paul Shaffer handling the keys.

He played his old 60's jazz (strung with used -"dead" rounds) with valley arts neck with a piece of foam under the strings. From an old article....
