Willie Kent

Hey guys, I have been working on a new blog as a tribute to one of my all time favourite players... Mr Willie Kent: http://williekent.blogspot.com/

Unfortunately I never got to see him play live, but did anyone here ever meet, or play with him?

Never saw him either, sadly. And that immortal red P-bass of his ought to have a website all its own. It is as if the entire history of modern popular music is somehow captured in a single instrument.

Great site you're making for a very underappreciated legend. All the best with it!

Thanks very much.
I've never actally thought about the p-bass like that... perhaps I'll try and do some more research and add a page.

Cheers!

Never heard of him, but now I'm glad I checked out this thread. After reading the bio, I've got to give him a listen. Thanks.

I saw Willie Kent & the Gents here in Madison several times in the early 90's--IIRC, a quiet, imposing looking fellow, didn't sing, played a beat up old p-bass. Had an older female singer Bonnie Lee that did some hillarious, bawdy-type blues w/ double entendre lyrics.

Nice site! I have that copy of Living Blues. I never got to see him live, but I always enjoy listening to him.

Wow--sensational footage. Thanks for the great link! Not sure if Willie ever toured with Buddy, so can't be certain if that is the man and his machine in all their youthful glory. But whoever it is, that is some bass workout, and just sublime tone.

Willie was a great person. Nice and had that old school feel down pat! Being able to see him weekly was nice and he always had a great band behind him. Mostly jazz cats the last few years of his life. They played a very smooth version of chicago blues.

Another cat thats worth mentioning is J.W.Willims.
