In fact, the easiest way to get him to blow you off completely is to ask him to have a picture taken. He will tell you he doesn't do that sort of thing, and will walk away.

The thing is, I can understand why people are hesitant about saying precisely where they may have seen a famous musician or actor. A couple of years ago I saw Roger Waters on the street in NYC. I thought it was pretty cool and tweeted about it. Lo and behold, some gossip website tweeted at me asking precisely where I saw him. And more recently I saw an instance where Gawker posted something similar about an actor I tweeted about. Granted, Willie's location might not turn up on one of those sleazy sites. But sometimes discretion about where or when you see someone notable might be in everyone's best interests. |

Being able to walk around with relative anonymity is pretty sweet. |

| | | | Willie Weeks is a terrific bassist... that said, He's not Paul McCartney, a picture wouldn't garner much interest (other than by a few of us bass geeks) and I doubt his picture would fetch 5 bucks on e-bay...even from those few who may have a clue as to who he is. There are many musicians and performers who are gracious (Babbitt is a great example) who were always happy and indeed honored to give an autograph or take a picture. Perhaps Willie just has some sort of shyness or social anxiety. That's certainly his perogotive to sign or not sign...pose or not pose. Basketball legend Bill Russell refuses to sign autographs as well...but Willie Weeks, phenominal bassist is no Bill Russell. |

He just might be a private guy and doesn't want pictures of him floating around on the internet. Even if it gets seen by 5 people, he just may not like the idea of it..it might make him uncomfortable. Not so hard to understand.

I do remember running into Michael Jordan at a high profile golf tournament and asking him to please sign my hat. He looked at me and said "I cant do that". I looked around as saw hundreds of people, many of whom would have also wanted him to do the same for them...and I understood...although a guy like Sergio Garcia signed all kinds of stuff for me. Go figure. It's Willies right to enjoy whatever level of privacy he wishes to accomplish in his personal life. I'm sure he won't complain however, when he loses a nice gig to some other guy who has learned the fine art of schmoozing and "brownnosing" LOL...

| | | | Somebody asked about Willie's green 1962 P-bass. I read in a 1990 Guitar Player interview with him that he bought it in a pawn shop in California for $200. He said it was a real special instrument but it lost some of its mojo when he had it refretted and he eventually wound up selling it, much to his later regret. You can see it quite well in the Doobies Farewell Concert DVD from 1982(?). He thought it was refinished in a weird green when he bought it, but to me it looks more like an original faded Lake Placid Blue Metallic with a tort guard .. very cool looking bass. The red silk windings on his strings at the time looked a lot like Rotosounds although he said by 1990 that he was playing Dean Markley roundwounds and had originally been a devote flatwound player for years.
I saw some recent photos of him in concert with Clapton in which he's playing a P bass that looks very similar to his original 'green' one .. anybody happen to know the story behind it? I thought it might be a reissue or a copy of his original '62 as he's known to have played Fender RI's in the past. |

She said a musician was coming to see her but she had no idea who he was, other than his name. When I found out it was Willie, I was there when he showed up and stayed way past my welcome. She had to run me off so they could have so privacy.

Firstly, they don't know you so why do they want the picture to be taken? Basically, you're just meeting someone for the first time and you're asking them to do you a favor? In a way it's kind of rude, and I could see some personalities finding it a bit intrusive. It's also a bit artificial: here I am with WW... So what, a week later he won't remember who you are, or at best/worst he'll remember you as the annoying person who wanted a photo. Other personality types might recognize that their accomplishments make them a celebrity of sorts, and people admire them for it. They may be more comfortable with a celebrity/fan situation, and not mind taking photos. But to others, they may not want the celebrity and find something fake about posing with a stranger for a photo, in essence implying a degree of familiarity that doesn't exist.
