How long should a guy give the band to start playing out? We have been in the basement except for NYE gig 6-9 months give or take.
I must say the 3 guuys I'm working with are great, talented, and no egos.
Not the most talented I've ever worked with but talented none the less.
I'm jonezin to play out, cause you will only get so good in the basement. Nothing beats stage time!
What say you?

Originally Posted by theduke1 We have been in the basement except for NYE gig 6-9 months give or take. | I just quit a band over it. Well, that and that they weren't my cup of tea style-wise.
I first saw them live, just doing 3 or 4 songs at a multi-act stage scenario. At that time they had guitar, drums, bass and vocal. They had about 10 original songs.
When they axed the bass player and brought me in, they quickly axed the singer too. Then it was revealed to me that the drummer wasn't permanent, he was just "helping out" the guitar player with this project.
So basically it turned into me and the guitar player and the drummer who wasn't committed.
Another guitar player showed up for a month, but he didn't work out.
Then a keyboard player was found. Not that the music really needed it.
All the time trying out for new vocalists. One every couple of weeks.
Pretty soon I've been playing in basements with this guy for seven months. Not a single gig. Not a single decent recording, even. Still playing the same dozen songs. Still no vocalist.
And then he says he thinks we need to practice twice a week instead of the once we'd fallen to.
So I said no. I quit. For all the reasons stated above. Besides that, I had another project much better suited to my taste.
Sad part is, the guitar player is a good friend of mine and he was a total jerkface about me quitting. Basically didn't talk to me for a couple of weeks. Sent me some angry emails.
My position was that we were still not personnel-complete. We still had no new material. We still had no gigs. We still had no decent recordings. The music isn't really my style. Twice a week was far too much time to commit to something that was clearly stuck and going nowhere. I'd joined because I thought it would be fun. And because I thought I could contribute something to the music. And it was fun. And I did contribute. And I would be happy to record some of our music to document what we'd done, but that I wasn't going to rehearse anymore and they should look for a replacement.
Oh well. Things are cool again, I think. We went out a couple of weekends ago and got drunk so I guess we're ok now.
Moral of the story: I'm not sure.

Been there played that karaoke/ I-Pod / DJ/ live dudes-dudette gig before.
P-Poor to Wow cash paycheck but come on, like it hasn't been done a thousand times before, and still will be every weekend and Holiday.
Oh well.
Where is the inovation going to come from?
btw: the last effort/band disintigrated during the last set of our New Years Eve debut.
Guess what: The Guitardist declared, " we don't need no stinking sound man" after the third set. Unplugged his stereo Line 6, and proceeded to deafen' the audience and band members with what he considered was music and the recording defined as EGO.
Ouch! Why are there so many GUITARDS in a bass player's life?
Currently holding down the rhythm section without a drummer and two Babes singin' and playing keys and back up acousic git string.
Still....... I'm not sure............ as posted above.
Pretty sure that when this disolves I'm sticking to my studio experience guns. Go in and play what is needed, get paid, walk away, and don't look back.
Oh... btw... I will be 59 in a two months... just maybe playing live is not where it is at anymore... for me.
Might be time to beef up my home recoring capabilities and ignore the Mid-West world at large.
OMHO, IME, blah-blah-blah etc.
LOL: Getting older, getting krankier (is that an anglo real word)

Where's a good place in the greater Milwaukee area to find used bases? I'm 95% sure what I want is a mahogany/rosewood Ibanez SR505 with Bartolinis. There don't seem to be a lot for sale here in the classifieds right now. I could call a bunch of non-local Guitar Centers to get the details on all the "SR505" models they have for sale, then have it shipped and only then know if it's a dud or if it's ok. Ebay likewise.
Surely there's somewhere within an hour's drive where I can get my sweaty mitts on a used one. I don't mind a few scuffs. I just want to make sure the hardware's in good shape and that the neck/frets/action is good.

I've done some recording, and musicials, but I have been told that I am a performer, so I long for the stage. So I guess at this point I'll wait until something else comes along.
Just bumming cause we have put in so much time in this Oh well "Such is life"
BTW grandson is back at CHM still fighting whatever it is that's got hold of him!
Thanks I O I O so it's off to work I go on a Saturday!

I've been in the same band for nine years. We usually do a series of studio recordings every winter. The studio time (in one of our basements) is to capture where we are in time as well as give us some material for handing out to prospective venues as demo.
We are not gigging real heavily, but enough to keep things fun. We do a mix of early evening dates and corporate work. It has been a nice balance, and something I hope we can keep going a few more years. I'm in my 50's, and really wouldn't want to do bar band cover gigs any longer. I like having time to get outside on the weekends, as well as be very free with my time for the family. Late night gigging doesn't mix well with that.
I also sing in church as part of a very well directed choir. That's been pretty good at keeping my "need to perform live" itch scratched.

I just joined a band as well. If all goes as planned we'll have a record and be gigging by spring. We're very bluesy stoner/doom rock, untitled as of yet. But basically listen to the first couple Black Sabbath albums and you'll get the picture of how we sound.

Anyone have a cheap 410 for sale?

When we Nailed "Call me the Breeze" and both guitar players are doing different leads through out the song, I think it is worth seeing where we are a year from now.
The paying music seen is somewhat tight in this area, so we'll see.
Other than playing out right now, this band is what I've been looking for for a along time.
Thanks for all your input!

| | Wisconsin Bassist Club Member #1 | | Join Date: Mar 2009 Location: Northern Wisconsin | | | Back injury Hey Duke - Thanks for offering to fill in for me at this Saturdays gig since I hurt my back / Sciatic Nerve. I'll be alright if I can stay away from some of the heavier lifting. I just lifted my Uber410 cab improperly and paid for it. Went to the Chiropractor 4 of the last 5 days (Never been to one before this) , and I'm getting better , but definitely far from 100%. I played a gig 2 days after my hernia surgery a year and a half ago , so I think I can manage playing this gig. Thanks again for your offer - I'll let you know if things change.
Take care!

I only asked Homer how you were doing and when I told him what you had posted he said that maybe they would have to call the Duke. I said if they needed me I'd help out. In no way am I trying to move on your deal.
Just trying to be a friend and help out.
Please don't take it the wrong way!
