Ok - Here is a question for you pedal users. If you could only own one pedal - Which kind would it be? Brand and effect type.
Just curious?
Great question PP! I stopped using pedals many years back in favor of the eternal hellfire and damnation of a rack rig....but, I used to love my Whammy Pedal, my Boss chorus and my lousy MXR Compression pedal. But even though I have dozens of toys available in my Line 6 Bass Pod Pro XT, I really have a "sound" preset and just stay with it all night. I wish I was more adventurous sound wise, but I really like what I have going on.

There's another great question, anybody else have a boatload of effects and you are just using some combination to get "a sound" and you never really do anything else with your effects?

Not an easy question. And not because I use such a great variety of incredibly necessary effects, either.

Let's not count my tuner, as that would be silly.

But should I count a preamp/DI? What if it has an overdrive/distortion feature? I say yes. And that might be a good candidate for a must-have pedal. (I am without one at present but I believe Santa may be bringing me an MXR M80.) But can you really count something that does little more than emulate the sounds some people get from their naked tube amp head?

After this it would have to be either a big fuzz/distortion unit or a multi-effect synth/envelope/octave pedal like the good ol' Bass Synth Wah. You can do a lot with one of those puppies.

I'm still searching for ways to incorporate my envelope filter and distortion into my band. The difficulty is, we're focusing like a laser beam on getting this album of covers recorded. No shows, no original music going on. I do find little ways to sneak stuff in, though. Here's a clip of an Emerson Lake & Palmer tune (really!). At the end of the clip you can hear the multiwave octave distortion kick in.

http://scottfeldstein.net/misc/2012/BF.mp3

And here's a dirty sound I dialed up for a song that deserved it.

Only one pedal??? oh my!

Hmmm... It would have to be an Eventide ModFactor. I use chorus, flange and tremolo effects the most. It also has a couple of very nice wahs. Not to mention the Undulator.

The quality and flexibility of that one pedal is second to none.

If you say no multi effect units, I'll say a Dr. Scientist Cosmichorus. Hands down my favorite single pedal ever.

I have tried every multi effects pedal known to man and hated then all, in fact I just traded my line6bass pod xt live to eviltwin for a Hartke HA3500, which I just traded for a brand new Fender Tolex case for my frettles.
Now I'm not saying my choice is right for everyone, but i cut my bass chops on the Beatles, Beach Boys, Johnny Rivers, etc so I'm a old school player. My G&Ls have no actives, just passive with coil tapping and I run flat wound strings with a Genz Benz 6.0 with 2 12Tcabs. I use a pedal tuner and a volume pedal and have never been happier with my sound.
All of these coments are of course IMVHO
Love & Peace

Over the last ten years I've gotten into to all kinds of electronic music that uses far out sounds. Those sounds have become part of my mental furniture. I find myself wanting to use them.

Duke,

How long did you have the ModFactor? There is a huge learning curve, and the recent updates are extremely beneficial to us bassists.

I went with a big board a couple times before but always found that I didn't end up using a lot of what was on there much. I'm also on a VERY strict 1 trip in and out rule for my gear and the band's basic light set up. A larger board pushes the limits of what I can stack on my cart safely :-)

There was a while where I'd run just my Deep Impact and nothing else. However, that was when I bought it on clearance for $150. When I saw them going for $800-$1200 I felt careless leaving it on the stage floor with all the spilt beer and drunk chicks getting on stage. I've since sold it as it wasn't getting any gig time. However, that may be the single stomp box I'd go with. I know it pushes the multi effect boundary but I never thought of it that way.

I find that in a three piece cover band there is a lot of sonic ground to cover and this board may help me do that. Then wet/dry mix deal is soooo important though IMO so that I don't loose the bass in an effort to fill in other ground.

I will argee that part of my dislike for effects is my lack of understnding of tech speak. If I ever find a multi that the manual says" for this sound do this" I may try another.
My attention span for reading manuals is that of a house plant! LOL

Fair statement!

The Eventide is probably the most tweakable, and has midi stuff as well. It can be difficult to know which knob to turn to get the desired result.

Figured I have to chime in here now that I know 2 members. Duke, zomb13 is the guy you met at the shop. I caught enough of the conversation to hear that. Thanks for the kind words man. And for anyone in the area, if you stop into Monument Music in Manitowoc let me know you're a member here and I'll hook you up.

I've been a guitarist for a little over a decade, but a chance to play bass for an acoustic trio popped up so I thought I'd jump on it. I vowed when I started the band I wouldn't just be a guitarist that plays bass, I'd actually learn how to do it right. A few weeks later I got a killer deal on an upright, and I've barely touched a guitar since. The upright lives at the music store, so if you want to drop in and give it a shot feel free.

Duke, I'd be all over a GTG here, and would be happy to help with anything I can. I'll bring a PA if the spot calls for it. I do have a good location too if it's ever needed. It's got a stage, food, drinks, and plenty of space. There is a fairly mighty flight of stairs though.

Wow - What a great offer!! We can't thank you enough!! Judging from the people in this club - I'm sure there would be plenty of help with the stairs.

Let me know if you want a club number or not.
Thanks again!!!

Probably a bit far for me, but for those who are planning on going, I'll just point out, that's Mother's Day. So that might complicate things for some who have moms, or are married to one....
