I had a double whammy good day today. Wife and kid are away on vacation. The Alan Slutsky book "The Funkmasters" (the great James Brown rhythm sections) arrived today, along with the DVD "Standing in the Shadows of Motown". So I could play a bunch today, work on grooves, and watch a great music DVD.

Wow. I am truly humbled by all this great, grooving music.
I grew up with it, have played much of it, but digging into it in depth - wow. Beautiful, groovin' stuff.

I am still getting totally schooled here. The James Brown grooves are a huge set o' lessons.
Plus as deep as I have been into Jamerson, seeing "Standing in the Shadows" gives me a big fat appreciation of Bob Babbitt. Man, what an underrated and underappreciated cat.

"Scorpio" was a big hit when I was a kid. I used to play air guitar and jump around on the bed to that song. I never knew what they were saying in the bass solo.
Just listened - it's "Grab it, Babbitt".

+1 Gives one a whole new respect for the instrument and it's roots! When all else fails, I can always resort to 'groove' playing.
