I saw the Jackson 5 a million years ago (the Commodores opened for them before they had a record) and Jermaine handled all the bass, sang, and danced. Here is an instrumental by him back in the day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZbJ8...eature=related

Nope...it was Jermaine. I didn't really know what a bass was at the time the J5 were doing all those variety shows...I just know Jermaine looked the coolest playing that thing that was not quite a guitar.

Yeah, Macca was cool with the bass but Jermaine was COOL. |

| | | | I stand corrected... I grew up with the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons, etc. and I was always under the impression that he was a hack at best. I didn't realize that he could really play.
Now... can Tito really play guitar!?!?!?
Thanks for the clip |

Thanks for the clip | Tito can play too. I read he has a blues band now. Remember, these guys worked the Chitlin circuit hard before they got famous. They didn't have the luxury of backing musicians, its just that Motown had a culture of using studio musicians and discouraging artists from playing themselves. That is why Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and the Comodores had such battles to get artistic control and play themselves.
With the exception of Rare Earth, their "token" rock group, it really wasn't until Rick James came along that Motown began to actively seek out self-contained acts.
