This is pretty impressive I must add. I didn't know Jermaine could get down and sing like this.

Thanks for posting that old video of him. I watched it 3-times because I was really digging on that excellent vibrato his voice has.. Pretty fast thumb too...

Jermaine is no joke. I saw the Jackson 5 a million years ago (the Commodores opened for them before they had a record) and Jermaine handled all the bass, sang, and danced. Here is an instrumental by him back in the day:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZbJ8...eature=related

I know guys like Brad will say it was Danny Partridge that owned guys like me-
Nope...it was Jermaine. I didn't really know what a bass was at the time the J5 were doing all those variety shows...I just know Jermaine looked the coolest playing that thing that was not quite a guitar.

Yep! Jermaine was more than adequate on the bass! And yes he could slap like a mutha! One of the best at singing and playing (and dancing all at the same time).

That is juicy -- I love the fact that he's good, but not a showoff. His part serves the song's demands. That's musicianship.

Remember that the studio version featured Nathan Watts on bass since Stevie Wonder wrote that song. I believe he also sang part of the vocals in studio too.

Nah, I would've said Peter Tork.

J/K

Yeah, Macca was cool with the bass but Jermaine was COOL.

I think its sometimes kind of unfortunate how with all the bad publicity that can come with being a member of that family, that we all can forget just how talented they are.

I stand corrected...

I grew up with the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons, etc. and I was always under the impression that he was a hack at best. I didn't realize that he could really play.

Now... can Tito really play guitar!?!?!?

Thanks for the clip

Tito can play too. I read he has a blues band now. Remember, these guys worked the Chitlin circuit hard before they got famous. They didn't have the luxury of backing musicians, its just that Motown had a culture of using studio musicians and discouraging artists from playing themselves. That is why Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and the Comodores had such battles to get artistic control and play themselves.

With the exception of Rare Earth, their "token" rock group, it really wasn't until Rick James came along that Motown began to actively seek out self-contained acts.

I was just thinking that from Berry Gordy's point of view that if your go to guy is Jamie Jamerson and your number twos are Carole Kay and Bob Babbitt, I can see why there was no big push for self-contained bands.

Babbitt and Jamerson are a bit of a dream team, but then there were Motown bands who could play-the Jacksons for one!

Man, He should hook up with his other bass playing brother (Anthony) and really show us how it's done. I wonder why Anthony wasn't ever mentioned much?
