Yikes...I bought myself a B-day present and watched it last night.

There are a lot of great tips for us mere mortals. Really though, that man is a force of nature.

He talks a lot about chordal positions and connecting them well within a piece for drama (Carol Kaye stresses similar things) and talks a lot about melodicism. He really really talks about big ears. I need to work on all of these!

He also seemed (to me) to use the E string for color, dynamics, acceleration etc., as opposed to using the E as the major starting point for his lines. I tend to live on the E and A to start my lines, and play up there in the first 5 positions, playing a lot of groove type stuff. I'd say I wield a 9 pound hammer, and Jack wields a jedi sword.

After that lesson, I took a big breath and told myself music is a journey, not a destination. It was either that or sell all my gear and call it a day!

Good stuff though. I love that guy's playing. Off to practice.

Sounds like much the same sort of info he gives in his FPR classes. Jack is not so much about skill as he is about musicality and connections. One of the things he emphasized in our class was to LISTEN before you play. Sounds simple, but so many of the students started fiddling with their basses while he was playing a piece for us, before they even had an idea where the music was going. Just seeing how he developed a bass line when working with a new piece was a revelation.

Yeahh...he mentioned a couple of times that you need to play with people and get out of the basement. Get in your car and go to your buddy's house.

Well said Zillo. I actually just met Jack 3 weeks ago after many years. I met him before a Tuna concert. He is like a "force of nature". I had the VHS Jack tape and finally bought the DVD. I love Jack's playing. I like that comment about the E string.
I would love to go the FPR , but I will have a kid in college. Someday!

So, my DVD shows up on the 3.8., I check it out and get my mind blown. I just love Jack's playing. My wife and I run out to the store and come home to find our dog ate the booklet. Happy ending is that I email homespun tapes, they are wonderful folks there, and they send me out a pdf file of the booklet. All is well an the pup is out of the doghouse.

That was the line that I used in my email to Homespun, they thought it was humorous.
Needless to say I was a little upset to find the music shredded all over the floor.
