Have any of you seen the recent Yes tour with new singer Benoit David (apparently he was found via YouTube; former member of Yes trib band)?
I haven't seen Yes in since forever, but I was thinking about catching their upcoming show in my area. Squire, Howe and White are in this lineup, which also includes Oliver Wakeman (Rick's son) on keys, and David on vocals.
It'd be a kick hearing the old Yes prog-rock tunes played well, but as a one-time big fan of the band, I'm not sure I want to see Yes w/o Jon Anderson. In fact, part of me says "that ain't Yes!"
Anyway, I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone who's seen the current lineup. Any set lists floating around?
Just came across this fairly recent interview with Squire. http://www.masslive.com/entertainmen...alks_abou.html |

The set will be shorter I'm sure, due to Frampton opening for them.

Nostalgic, with few surprises except for Howe doing "Rhythm of Love", and they did a rip-roaring rendtition of "South Side of the Sky" that made me gain an appreciation for that song.
On the one hand, its not Jon. On the other hand, as I understand it, Jon always refused to do material from Drama, which (heaven help me) was always a favorite of mine and alot of other fans. So, you might actually get to hear something from it this time.

Great show, definitely worth seeing. They did not have an opening band so it was 2.5 hours of Yes, and as I recall the did do a number or two from the Drama album. I'd go see this tour but I'm going to be in England when they play the Beau Rivage this time around.
My suggetion: Go. Enjoy. |

I still idolize Chris Squire (along with Paul McCartney) as being one of the two best bassists I've ever heard - from a compositional standpoint.
But it's ironic, to say the least, when Yes starts to become a Yes tribute band...

And I too saw them in December of 08. No opener, just 2.5 hours of Yes. Best part was hearing Tempus Fugit and Machine Messiah.
I urge you to go. Cause I don't see Jon getting back with them for a while now...

Way back when, I liked Frampton (along with the other billions of people who made "Frampton Comes Alive" the then-biggest double album in history). But now, I could take or (mostly) leave him. with apologies to Frampton fans... |

I saw them last year with Asia as the opening act and I swear if you'd close your eyes you'd never know that either Jon or Rick wasn't on stage with them. Besides, it was cool seeing Squire live again and in a small concert setting. Just go if you like Yes music and enjoy the show. |

| | | As far as I'm concerned, Yes hasn't been Yes since Bruford left. The sole reason I went to see them on the Union tour was so that I could see Bruford showing White how to play the intro to "And You And I".
Mind you I don't dislike White, I just think of him as a competent rock and roll drummer - whereas Yes is not a rock and roll band...

MM | Yeah, this is what bothers me A LOT too. To the OP, all reviews of Benoit are very positive. But the purist in me says "no".
Jon had to take like, a year off to recover from his asthmatic something-or-other. But unlike many aging rockers (no offense intended - I'm one too!), he can still sing well. In fact, he is or was doing a solo tour of some sort. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
