Are You In - Incubus

Well, I always assumed Are You In was played with a Warwick, like most Incubus songs. And I also always assumed that that's why it was so growly. But I just learned that it is played on a Jazz bass. How do I get my Jazz to do that? That tone is freaking amazing to me.

no, makes sense to me... Dirk's main warwicks were Streamer Stage IIs, which had jazz-style pickups. You'll likely wind up with generally similar results out of each.

The tone in that song has 10x more growl than my bass. I have an ash/maple jazz bass with Ernie Ball Power Slinky strings, with the bridge pickup full and the neck at about 1/2, tone at 1/4. I can't seem to get my bass to do that though.

Have you tried soloing the bridge pickup and boosting the bass on your amp , that should get you a bit closer

You can actually watch him play his Jazz bass on the DVD that came with Morning View.

I don't know, I can nail that tone with my 5-string ESP, but not my jazz. Oddly enough, that bassline is what inspired me to pick up bass.

high gain!!! good compresion

Dirks rig is really incredible (well it used to be). he used(uses) a subharmonic synth on his rig. its not like a bass synthesizer, but its a subtle effect that really shapes bass tone. behringher used to make one, but its discontinued now.

open the pickups all the way and the tone knob as well. turn down the volume and crank your input gain. start with that.

also the bass he played was a 60's or 70's model jazz. its hard to get any modern bass to sound like vintage wood.

That's what he used. Is it a useful thing to have? Might buy one because I like that tone so much.

I always found that sub harmonic thing to sound pretty unnatural, sounded very obviously like some sort of octaver. Didn't sound like they'd put much effort into making it mix into the clean signal very well. Maybe his was better, but I didn't think much of the Behringer one, Ashdown has that sub harmonic thing but I can't really remember what it sounds like too well, I seem to remember i being a little more organic though. Dirk's one's probably a fair bit better though.

See the review at the bottom by kickdrumman? What a dick, obviously doesn't know how to sort out a proper bass tone

Being a huge Incubus fan, I find it interesting that you think that tone is very growly. To me it is warm and tubey, there is some growl, but not close to other Incubus songs. Well anyways, he recorded that track with a 60s Jazz Bass strung with Super Slinkys into a demeter tube DI.

Some of that is defintely the tube stage of a pre amp. E.g. on my Mesa, I get "growl" after about 1/2 throttle on the preamp. Gotta run dem tubes out a bit...

OP: what volume are you playing at? YOu might need to really cranks the gain on your amp, and turn the volume up a little. I'm sure in the studio, he had his amp cranked in an isolated room.
