I think Stevie Wonder might have something to say about that.

Actually, Jim Beard is just positively incredible. Listen to "Tandoori Taxi" from the "Truly" album. Amazing, and played like a real bass player.

Greg "Mouse" Phillinganes and Stevie. Greg is an absolute beast on keyboard bass. Stevie is without peer.

Philliganes on Chaka's Beatles' cover-
"We Can Work It Out"...ridiculous.
Other notables-
Michael Omartian ("Yah Mo B There"), 'Hawk' Wolinski (Rufus), David Frank (The Sytem), & the king of the catchy Pop-bass hook, Rod Temperton.

A local guy around here that went by the name of "Termite" was a synth bass monster...TOP, Jaco, Worrell-inspired Funk, etc.

Dexter Wansell, anyone?
Also, the kid from Soulive is a beast as well.

Joey DeFrancesco on the Hammond B-3 blows me away with the complexity of his bass lines while totally rippin' up the B w/ his right hand! I believe B-3 bass is a combination of foot pedals and/or left hand. Plus it still qualifies as keyboard bass! Lots of B-3 players cover the bass--Jimmy Smith, Larry goldings, larry Young etc. Jack McDuff seemed liked he would incorprate a bassist pretty often though. Ray manzarek held the bottom down pretty well too!

I've seen Soulive a few times and I'm pretty sure it was Neal Evans left hand, whatever...he has a great feel. Another of the newer cats with a nice "bass" feel is Peter Kuzma with Gerald Veasly's band, he plays some wicked grooves.

Do we have to pay a fine or anything to talk about this here?

Evans has a great feel. That's the difference between the guys banging away on lower octaves and the guys who really understand the function of the bass instrument. For me that's the beauty of it... while the simplicity of the instrument is obvious, what to do with it isn't.

Re: Stevie: I can play "Boogie On Reggae Woman"... I just can't "play" it like Stevie. It's similar to trying to nail Rocco's feel with TOP.

Better yet, check him out on drums... seems easy until you try to do it

Dex is a bad cat IYAM.... Neal Evans isn't too shabby either.

Still, Stevie, Bernie and Larry Goldings are a tad bit more badass than the above. IMHO.

Chester Thompson plays mean pedals. I've forgotten about Dexter Wansel, haven't heard him since 1980 or thereabouts. On the rock side Ray Manzarek does well. Best left hand bass has to be Fats Waller.

Bernie is house party funk, Stevie is soulful funk. Each soars high above anyone in their respective funk.
