Smile Young lions of electric jazz/fusion?

Sign in to disble this ad
Having been out of the bass loop for quite a while, I'm wondering who are the new young cats in the jazz world? I'm interested in a definite electric jazz vibe, like Alain Caron, Lincoln Goines, Jeff Andrews, Janek Gwizdala, etc.

I'd like to pick up some new music and need some recommendations along those lines...

Not young enough to be considered a "young lion" (he has a great body of work behind him and his new CD with Jeff Sipe is amazing!).

The name that comes to mind is of course Hadrien Feraud, who pwns us all!

Been a Chris Wood fan for quite a log while, and have heard Matt Garrison as well. Will definitely check out Hadrien Feraud! Thanks!

Yep, everyone mentioned so far is pretty freaking amazing. Also check out Tal Wilkenfeld. She's a nice up and coming bassist. There's more than enough threads on her here but IMO she's got some nice chops and gets the job done in a band setting. She's no Hadrien Feraud or Matthew Garrison but she's good. Tony Grey is another one. He's well worth checking out.

Hmm, I can see that Tal is young but I just don't think she is all that great a player. Definitely no moreso than your average bassist. I do think that her relationship with Vinnie has let her get gigs that she wouldn't get if it was just up to her playing to qualify her.

Hadrien, however, can really play. He can write too! Nice to see you here Hadrien!

Are you talking "young" or "new" to you?
'Cause I would not put Caron, Goines, or Andrews (or Garrison) in the "young lions" category...they've been around the block for awhile (no disrespect intended...they're all great!).

If it's someone "new"-
How about...
>Mike Pope
>Yiorgos Fakanas Bass Player just yapped about this guy (he's not that young, either...he's Greek & his cd can be heard at www.cdbaby.com Jaco-esque/Brecker Brothers-style Funk
>Fima Ephron (again, not "young") Nice solo disc + his work with The Screaming Headless Torsos and The Hasidic New Wave

From the "young" side-
Anthony Setola
Sekou Bunch
Steve Jenkins
...all have samples on iTunes

Agreed on all of these.

I first met Anthony Setola over ten years ago when he worked at a Baltimore area music store. As someone who can get hampered by a setup I don't like, it was pretty wild (and mildy annoying) watching Anthony be Anthony on just about anything he grabbed off the wall. Very sold player.

Steve Jenkins is another local guy; nice guy, excellent player employing the Willis/Garrison technique and I love his approach... and he actually is a young guy

David Dyson is yet one more Maryland bassist to watch.

Wasn't Sekou on Tom Brownes' early releases way back when?

I've been recommending Fima every since I heard his work with Lost tribe.

A couple more +1s for Steve Jenkins, Hadrian Feraud, and yes, Tal Wilkenfeld. I don't no why the mere mention of her name is usually followed by negative crap. I think the thing I hear in her playing and whooshing over the head of some people is, groove!

You know, Brad...I would say you're correct.
I didn't know Bunch went that far back...'cause my first exposure to him was from Survivor a couple years back!
Anyway, those into Wayman Tisdale & Marcus' solo stuff would probably dig Bunch's latest album.

...and then I forgot about Eprhon's Lost Tribe stuff!

For stuff with a funkier vibe I really dig Doug Johns two CDs.

I hear what you're hearing, jerry. I hear substance... which IMO is still highly underrated.

I know Tal pretty well. Fact is, she deserves every gig she's had, is more than capable of real musical contribution, and is a very nice person. She is not like Hadrien Feraud. Hadrien, who I've gotten to know better recently, is a voracious virtuoso of the bass unlike just about anybody at this point in history. And at age what, 24? Matt Garrison and I recently did a gig with him and it literally made our eyes glaze over. Really staggering command this guy has. Tal is an extremely talented bassist with a fantastic "way" about her musically. Great groove...real easy feel. Funky and creative. Some chops and cool solo ideas. Definitely someone you should check out...as much so as Hadrien. But there's no quantitative way to compare the two.

Nothing's "going over anyone's head" as far I as I can tell. If groove goes over someone's head, I think they should rethink being a bass player at all :-) I wouldn't say that applies to beginners, though. Sometimes it takes some awakening to figure that all out. However I would say there are some "elephant-in-the-room" types of prejudices that work for AND against her a lot. Some guys gush over her because she's a female and attractive, some hate her for her success and want to say it's because she's "with" Vinny. Being with Vinny may have contributed to what gigs were within her political reach, but she's on them because she can play. Period.
