Your fave fretless players?

I'm not new to fretless, but I haven't had one in my arsenal for a while. That changed this holiday season. I just got a Peavey Foundation fretless-circa 1990's, with the original hard case and all the case candy. I just love that tone-MUWAH!!! Fave players-The mighty Tony Franklin would be #1! Others are Steve DiGiorgio, Jaco Pastorius, Pino Palladino, Michael Manring, Steve Bailey, Bakithi Kumalo, Boz Burrell, to name a few. Others that don't play fretless full time but have layed down some killer fretless lines-Nathan East, Flea, Jack Bruce, Sting.

In addition to those you listed, I gotta talk about Freebo. Find the early Bonnie Raitt albums from the early '70s, WAY before her success with Don Was. Freebo plays a fretless P (with an added J pickup in the bridge) and lays down some great greasy funk on things like "You've Been In Love Too Long", and heart-breakingly beautiful accompaniment to Bonnie's voice and guitar on "Love Has No Pride" and "Too Long At The Fair". He plays a lot of stuff where you can't tell it's fretless until HE wants you to know it- a little slide here, a little vibrato there.

One of my all-time favorite fretless players, and the first fretless player I was aware of (about two years before Jaco).

John

Thanks for the info. I'll be looking for those early albums.

Mick Karn's fretless Wal tone is what gave me GAS pains for one (fortunately -because of the $$$- I can stand them since it's a somewhat recent discovery):

Truth. I've had a couple of those early Bonnie albums on vinyl for about 25 years. Give it Up would be the best example, IMO. When that bass drops in on Too Long At The Fair you can't help but smile.

He might be a acquired taste, but along with most of the names mentioned, I dig Eberhard Weber. Nice to see Freebo get a mention too, his early playing was a huge influence on me. I've always wished Bonnie would go back to Woodstock and record on a four-track one more time, the feel of her early work is priceless.

Percy and Jaco for me. Percy has to be one of the sickest bassists I've ever heard though!!. Just listen to Unorthodox Behaviour from Brand X. Simply amazing!!!
