Jazz - John Pattitucci (sp?), Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller
Fusion - Stanley Clarke, Jaco, Oteil Burbridge, Kai Eckardt
Those are my 3 or 4 favorites in each, and really they all kind of cross genre and don't necessarily fit in just one category. |

Albums to check him out on -- Bill Evans Trio - Waltz for Debby and Sunday at the Village Vanguard, Portrait in Jazz, Explorations. Brilliant group, my favourite piano trio (second place goest to the OP-Ray Brown-Ed Thigpen trio.) Also dig him on Ornette Coleman's "Free Jazz" playing with Charlie Haden.
Also, put in a vote for Charlie Haden. Dig him with Pat Metheny on "Beyond the Missouri Sky" and his own releases with his band, the Liberation Music Orchestra.
A connection between Haden and LaFaro -- they were very close friends, lived together, and both studied under Red Mitchell.[ Red was an amazing bass player who I don't think has ever gotten the widespread recognition that he so widely deserves. If you can, try and find the album "Presenting Red Mitchell." Also, Red was the bassist who really pioneered tunign the bass in 5ths. There's also a duet album -- maybe with Jim Hall? -- that's widely sought after, but I'm not sure of the name.
Which also brings to mind a duo album with Jim Hall and Ron Carter. There are two, actually -- "Telephone" is, IIRC, a little bit more reccomended. Finaly, there's another duo album, this one with Joe Pass and Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson, who set the bar so high for technique on double-bass that the heaviest hitters of today STILL aren't getting it as good as he did with such spotless, effortless, powerful technique and spotless intonation. The closest I've heard are Patitucci, McBride, and Brian Bromberg. Brian is also a pretty heavy chops dude, but he does it in such a fantastic musical sense. Amazing player -- check out his album called "Jaco" featuring some pretty amazing and original takes on and arrangements of Jaco tunes.
Also check out Miroslav Vitous for both jazz and fusion. IIRC, he was a founding member of Weather Report (if not, he played with them for some time in their early days.) Other than his appearances with them, he's also an amazing jazz player. If you search the Recordings [BG] forum you should find a video of him playing with the Jeff Berlin trio.
