Wooten plays a 5-string fretless, so I guess I'd go with him.

I like Mike Gordon as well.

Ack, there's too many out there! Oh well, here's a couple.

-Steve Digiorgio, as mentioned, has the audacity to tune the opposite direction amidst the wall of drop Z guitarists and still comands respect

-Sean Malone, great fretless 5 string work

-Steve Swallow, the quintessential bass guitarist of jazz

-Gary Willis, one of the original fretless masters

-Vic Wooten, though most of you probably haven't heard of him yet

Steve Swallor is a favorite.

Juan Nelson uses that B string so tastefully, and makes it sound so gnarly.

I loved how approprate and tasteful Dirk Lance was with those lower notes too.

Not a 5-string player except on some few songs but he downtunes to C#, Paul gray from slipknot.

Matt Garrison. He's ace!

not forgetting Dave LaRue, or Stuart Hamm when he used a 5.

Mike Porcaro is a great 5-string player (although his stage presence is horrible to me).

I think nowadays just about everyone has a 5 string bass, but my personal faves are

Alex "Dirk Lance" Katunich from Incubus. he is one of the reasons i started playing. i am sad he is no longer in incubus, the drum/bass relationship is totally different now...although Ben Kenney is excellent as well...

Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne. say whatt you want about the music, but this guy can freakin' rip.

P-Nut. how can you leave him out? I think he brought the 5 string to the "mainstream" for a lot of modern bassists.

rock.
