...and your real name is?

I'm curious how many of the prominent bassists that perform under a pseudonym came about their names.

*What is the reason that Michael Balzary is called Flea?
*How Did Gordon Sumner come up with Sting?
*etc....

I would like to hear from TB'ers about the various bassists that are in popular (and not-so-popular) music today regarding the pseudonyms they play under and how they got their new nick-name.

Aaron Wills AKA "P-Nut"
...I'm assuming it's the shape of his noggin.

Flea?
...the size of his 'noggin'?

I believe that back when he was a schoolteacher, he was known for wearing a yellow and black striped jumper (looks like a bee). The nickname 'Sting' has stuck ever since.

Flea

I believe for some reason people called him Mike B. the Flea, and I guess Flea just stuck with him.

I read he was called Flea by his friends in school because he simply couldn't sit still in class. I guess his stage antics came naturally.

Ahh Ok, so not just keeping it to just those two bassists... what other cats out there using pseudonyms?

like Cachao & Donald 'Duck' Dunn...

just curious to see if someone knows how (maybe) Muzz Skillings got his first name.

That's correct, although the name was given to him by some bandmates.

I've heard that Geddy Lee's real name is Gary. "Geddy" was the way his Grandmother or Aunt used to pronounce it.

Geddy Lee = Gary Weinrib. "Lee" may be his middle name. Alex Lifeson's real name is Serb for. . . . well, life-son.

On page 130 of his book, Sting mentions that he was given his nickname by Gordon Solomon, the bandleader when he was playing with the Phoenix Jazzmen.

Geddy is the yiddish accented pronunciation of Gary, and it's what his mother or grandmother (I can't remember which) called him growing up.

Lee is his middle name and Alex's real last name is Zivojinovic.
