Am I Blind or Did Bottesini....

Its 11:00 pm right now and im really tired but it looks to me like bottesini is using a 3 string bass? Can't find any info about it online...is the G string just very clear or is their only 3strings?

Sorry, this may seem really stupid to ask...

There were only three strings on his bass. If you look at the music he wrote you will rarely see any notes below a low A. I think I've only seen a lower note in only one of his pieces.

His lowest string would have been a G, actually. G-D-A.

I didn't realize that he tuned in 5ths. That's good to know.

That was, btw, the standard-bass tuning of his time. Read something about the history of the bass and you will be enlightened!

Don't balk at the price; it's well worth it. If everyone on this board had read this book, we'd have very little to talk about!

You think that's bad? The same author is trying to sell a biography of Dragonetti for $175.

I read conflicting articles between 4ths,5ths and a combination between the two. But I would assume that his lowest string would be a B since none of his works go lower than that (A orchestra tuning). He had all of his strings a whole step above the standard.

In the preface of "Yorke Complete Bottesini" is written something like he used SILK string and tuned them a FOURTH above orchestra pitch.
