Barry Guy workshop this summer - Vancouver

Barry Guy and Maya Homburger are the artists in residence for the Vancouver Creative Music Institute coming in June:

www.vcmi.ca

It's a one-week improvisation workshop, so, not strictly a bass event, though they've usually incorporated instrumental master classes. Oh, uh, Evan Parker's going to be there as well. Canuck and left coast improv-heads, take note.

I saw Barry Guy and Evan Parker together (with Peter Evans and Paul Lytton) a couple of weeks ago. To my ear they're both playing better than ever...

Yeah, those guys just keep moving forward, their best album is always the most recent one. I played a festival once where the only bass players were Barry and I. Talk about insignificance!
How was Evans in that context? I have some gigs with him next week.

brilliant. It was astonishing to hear how much of evan parker's stuff he can get out of a trumpet! At one point I had my eyes shut, and was listening to what I was sure was an evan solo (and I should clarify that I know evan parker's music well, have seen him live a lot of times and listen to his albums), opened my eyes and it was Peter! But he wasn't just derivative, just that that is part of what is incredible about him...
Evan Parker pointed out that the trio have been playing longer than Peter Evans has been alive, and introduced him as the future of the music...

Sounds good. I am excited, tonight is a mix and match deal with some of the older guys, Jon Raskin, Henry Kaiser,William Winant, etc. tomorrow is a quartet with James Fei and Weasel Walter. Should be great.
Evan is very curious about younger musicians. He is a really nice man, especially for a genius.

He was incredible, every bit as great as he is supposed to be. We had a nice duo in the "Company" type concert.
He has an equal concern for pitch and texture in improvising, something I really try to work with so it was really easy to work with him.
The quartet concert with Weasel Walter and James Fei was really brutal - and absolutely great.
