Ben Street

The Sunday night headliner at this year's Fox Jazz Fest in Appleton, WI (held every Labor Day Weekend) was saxophonist David Sanchez and his band. The bass player, Mr. Ben Street, needed a bass for the gig.

I was asked by the event organizers if Ben could use my German carved. I agreed and was not disappointed.

Ben was a very cool guy even though the band had a rough day of travel and arrived just a couple hours before the gig.

The man sure made my bass sing. They had the bass high in the mix and he sounded amazing. Hard swinging walking lines, very cool approaches to the lating songs, and good solos.

I have heard some of Ben's music on some Kurt Rosenwinkel albums. Meeting him, and seeing him play in person was a very cool experience.

I attached some pics of the gig.

Way! Who's drumming?

Mr. Street is one of about seven children of the saxophonist, mouthpiece-maker and educator Bill Street of Gorham, Maine. I saw Ben play with Mark Turner and Jeff Ballard at the University in Gorham once; he's all you say and more!

Knowing his dad (and some of the rest of his family) it's no surprise.

Ben is one of the most interesting bass players of our times, period.

That's Adam Cruz on drums. I took him on his first road gig in '91, he's come a long way since. I saw him and Ben in Puerto Rico last week, great guys.

Easy,

Ben is my favorite contempoaray bassist. He's one of those players who makes every note count.

I've been listening a lot the last few days to the new Billy Hart album, 'Quartet'. Ben Street is the bassist on it, Mark Turner tenor and Ethan Iverson piano.
Its a great record, really intricate interaction, and the bass playing is great. beautiful tone, and keeps everything together when billy hart is getting very wild!
highly reccomended, theres a review here:

Yes, I have it too. I don't think it's a great record, but Ben is playing great as usual. He really understands his role and keeps in his hands the bottom of the music. Also, listen to his tone...wow!
