Bob Cranshaw

He is coming to my school on sunday. I've seen him on the Steve Jordan DVD and listened to him in youtube clips with Sonny Rollins, but what are some recordings/things I should listen to read about/know about before I get the chance to meet and speak with him?

Best

For my favorite Cranshaw recordings, I love Sonny Rollins, "The Bridge

Also, Barry Harris, "Chasin' the Bird," with some terrific 3rd generation bebop drumming from Clifford Jarvis. Grant Green's "Idle Moments" and "Solid" are killer, too. Not to mention Lee Morgan's "The Sidewinder," "Delightfulee" and "The Gigolo." The man has recorded a ton with many of the greats--I'm just scratching the surface here.

Lee Morgan "The Sidewinder"
Dexter Gordon "Gettin' Around"

It's an honor for you to meet him. Savor and remember it, you'll be finding him on records for the rest of your life.

Mary Lou Williams

Mary Lou Williams "Zoning". Bob played great electric bass on one side. (I have vinyl.) Some pretty wild upright playing ala Stanley Clarke on the other by another player whose name escapes meat the moment. Great album.

And Hank Mobley's "Hi Voltage" has a stone groove.

I love Bob. He is one of the nicest guys in the business, period. A Class act - great Bassist, and great champion of musicians' right here at our AFM 802 Local. To quote Bill Kirchner "If you can't get along with Bob Cranshaw, it's your problem!"
