Carlos Henriquez I stopped by Pete Miller's on my way home from my gig at the Jazz Showcase last night as I expected some of the guys from the San Francisco Jazz Collective might be there to sit in with Bobby Broom and his trio after their concert at Northwestern U.
I was right about that, and walked in to a typically burning Joe Lovano solo. I didn't recognize the bass player at first as I had only met him once before, and he had a cap on, but when he was introduced, it made sense, Carlos Henriquez! He's teaching at NU now and I heard him with the faculty band a few months ago, dug him, but he didn't get a chance to play like this at that concert.
Singing, well developed story-telling solos, super bad time and intonation, and he got around on Dennis Carroll's big old bass just fine. Carlos, you are a great player and I look forward to hearing you again, soon!
