Charnett Moffett's RH pizz technique

People who have seem him live. He does some incredibly fast stuff so I assume he uses two fingers right? Does he have a more BG approach to 2 fingers or the kind of diagonal playing 2 finger technique?

I've seen him do fast stuff (from the back of the hall - it was McCoy Tyner) using the whole arm in a motion starting at the shoulder. I couldn't see his fingers but on this occasion I would have been suprised if he used two.

He uses his first and third fingers perpendicular to the strings.

Why should this be in bassists when its dealing with his technique used to play so fast?

I've got an old Montreal Jazz Fest videotape with Stanley Clarke playing 2 guitars at the same time and Charnett Moffett playing upright. This is exactly what he does with his right hand.

Flashy!

I read an interview with him long ago, where he said he thought it made the most sense, since those fingers are almost equal in length. Of course it flies in the face of the "more meat on the string" tradition, and I always thought it felt awkward, too. Maybe he's got big meaty fingertips or something. Sucker can play, though.

Uh... didn't you start the thread? They end up under the heading in which you post 'em, AFAIK...

Yeah except a mod moved it here.

Hmm..maybe because his name appeared in the thread. Anyway, he's a helluva player, wherever you put him. I'm grappling with the concept of pizz'ing with 1 and 3...though it makes sense, due to the respective lengths of the fingers, I don't know if I could train them to get the job done. Seems to work fine for Charnett, though.

Doesn't he use the middle finger for slower stuff, like walking too? That's what I remember when I saw him. 1st & 2nd for regular slow and walking stuff. 1st & 3rd for flashy stuff, and then thumb for slapping BG style. He may use his tips but he still gets really good tone anway. It's probably not too noticable if he's not digging in when playing flashy cuz he goes so fast anyway. And then when he breaks out the bow, I just wanna go home and break mine in half and call it quits.

I just saw him July 2nd live. I wasn't close enough to see exactly what he was doing with his right hand fingers. But yes, he was fast.

Charnett's pizz

I saw the same concert as Jazzin' but was close enough . All the walking lines were one finger only (for almost 90% of the gig). He would use is middle finger once in a while in real uptempo walks. And use his weird 1st + 3rd finger on fast licks only (only a few times during the entire gig).

What a player...
