Dave Holland's Tailpiece

hey i don't know if anyone else has noticed Dave's little symbol on the tailpiece of his bass? Any idea what it means or anything? Going to see him (again) in London with Jim Hall soon, should be a very good concert!

To me it looks like one of the symbols from the fourth Led Zeppelin album. Maybe Dave loves Zep....

seriously I have no idea.

Just saw him last night at Birdland in NYC. His present quintet smoked. You will be very happy you went.

I've seen it before, looks like something from Celtic Mysticism, maybe an infinity symbol of some kind? William Butler Yeats, Willam Blake, torch bearers of the Holy Grail, Monks of Normandy, the wind that shakes the barley, that sort of thing. Would be nice to know for sure!

Yeah I thought it looked like a cross between John Bonham and John Paul Jones's symbols from led zep. Well I know that they lifted the symbols from the book of signs and the symbols on the album cover of Conference Of The Birds is from the book of signs, so maybe that's the answer.
I'm sitting in the front row, so maybe if i shout really loud i can ask him. That'll be my first time seeing the quintet, though I saw the big band last year and they rocked (or jazzed!) Seeing Pattituci and Nathan East this weekend too, with Wayne and Herbie's bands!

It is a triquetra. It has a Christian trinity meaning, but it is celtic and predates Christianity so it is difficult from just its presence to know what Dave means by it. Probably a trinity symbol though.
