It was very nice, and he's a great dude to hang with as well.

Many favorite bassists of mine have already been mentioned in this thread, but I'd like to insist in a great bassist whose work, I think, should be more widely known: Anders Jormin from Sweden. I think most of his recordings are on ECM catalog.

Check this two vids:

The other "can't miss" bassist I'd like to bring up here is Don Thompson, from Canada, who is not only a out-of-this-world bassist ( I recommend his recordings with Jim Hall and Terry Clarke during the mid 70's to 80s; for a sample of his high calibre playing, check his solo playing in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNAw4H-yrrM), but also excels on piano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3FtWlCs_WM ) and vibes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCRQeLy9EIU)

+1 to Anders Jormin. Tons of chops and everything he does with them is very, very musical.

Don Thompson I just cannot explain! I don't know how one man can do so many things so well!

Haven't read the thread so he may have already been mentioned. Victor Krauss, brother of ms. Grammy, Alison Krauss, is a monster bass player.

I saw him play with her way back in the early 90's, and unless I'm mistaken, he's still holding down the low end for Lyle Lovette.

Super good player.

All of the above! Two of my favorites are Mike Arnopol and Ralphe Armstrong.

I didn't know that Ralph plays DB too! Thanks!

I saw him playing with J.L. Ponty's group over two decades ago, killer groove...!!!

When I was at Jamey Aebersold's jazz camp last July I got to hear a dozen jazz bassists in a week. They were all very good, but the stand outs for me were Rufus Reid and Lynn Seaton. I particularly enjoyed Lynn's playing one evening because he not only had perfect intonation and rhythm, but distinctly reminded me of Ray Brown, but maybe a bit hipper, if that's possible. I heard Rufus play later in a bar gig and he was unbelievable - so "on" that it was a real pleasure to hear. John Clayton is also a great bassist I'll go to see when he plays. So many great bassists! We're so lucky to live in this time period!
