That track has some real groove to it... but I just don't see it as a funk piece.

What should I listen to that would change my definition of what funk music is?
Opening the "what is jazz" and "what is funk" cans-of-worms is something I'm not really interested in doing.

Plain and simple, I have always considered this kind of stuff "jazz funk." I think of jazz as the ballroom dancing of music; it incorporates many folk-oriented genres and assimilates them into jazz. But, in short, yes, it's funk.

I think it's too tinny. I like snares with a really crisp, snappy sound, especially for funk. Personal preference I suppose.

I think this would be classified as 'jazz funk' as well. Its not really full out, raw, intense funk like Prince or Average White Band or that kind of thing (what is usually labeled as funk), but it's a little more laid back and, well, sounds more jazzy for lack of a better word.

Back to the original question: the first two G. Love albums would seem to qualify. Very funky, with great upright work by The Marshmallow Man Jimmy Prescott.

Soul Coughing.

As far as definitions... I leave it to the historians and musicologists. For us players, do what you are best at... playing.

I think I got a bit defensive in my last comment. Sorry about that.
