double bass women

Hello everyone!

I am Malgosia and I am a student of double bass performance in Gdansk.
Here, in Poland, a woman playing double bass is still a rarity and that is why I would like to write a thesis about women and double basses.

So right now I am trying to find women playing this great and beautiful instrument - solo players, leaders of groups in orchestras, composers or professors.

I will be very grateful for any information from you.

THANK YOU )

I wish you all the best

Witaj Małgosiu!

You might want to ask this question over in the double bass side of the forum. There are also a few female bassists who hang out there and might be a great resource for your thesis.

There are lots of female DB players in the amateur bluegrass/old-time/trad. folk scene in the US. Out of all the folk bassists I've met when I was living in Texas, perhaps 1/3 were female.

I recommend looking into information on Diana Gannet....she is the double bass professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and a former student of Gary Karr. She is an incredible player.

Female double bassists

Chase up Paula Gardiner from Wales or Gill Alexander, Suffolk. Both solid professionals.

Miriam Sullivan, Cathy Harley and Noriko Ueda

I really like Miriam Sullivan's playing too, she's solid! I couldn't find a personal website, but here's a link to an interview:

http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/lifes...e_bassline.asp

and also, watch out for another Australian musician (NYC based)... better known as a pianist, but scary on upright bass too: Cathy Harley.

P.S. Ed, I agree with you, Noriko Ueda is killin'... I caught her live brunch set at the Blue Note last week. I was like, whoa!

Petya, or Petia, Bagovska, is a well-known Bulgarian bassist who has done much to advance women bassists. She is presently here in Chicago but spends much time in Eurpoe as well.

I love Gdansk. Unfortunately, it's been been way too long since I last visited.

Hej Małgosiu,

there's a "bass women" from Italy, also playing Double Bass. Here is her website:

www.antonellamazza.com

Try her "jazz" photo gallery, most of her pictures from there are with the DB

She also owns a sweet pink Warwick

There's a twelve year old just joined Bruocsella Symphony Orchestra bass section called Elodie. She plays on a half size bass and has played for five years. She will be doing her first concert with us in Brugge on 10th June.
What about Chi-Chi Nwanoku from the Orchestra of the Age of the Enlightenment (CD of Vanhal and Dittersdorf)?

There's also Brandi Disterheft here in Canada. She's a wonderful player -- leads her own quartet, and plays with Laila Biali's groups (I saw her with Laila's trio and bought their CD immediately at intermission.) Great bass player, and a Humber College graduate.

I'd say Joëlle Léandre again. She is amazing. I have been fortunate enough to to get to work with her and study with her. You can a hear a track from our quartet cd "Cruxes" on my Myspace page.
She a great person, and strict teacher and a wonderful player.
there is also a page about her here:

Another great classical player is Christine Hoch

Lee Ann Crocker plays in The San Francisco Symphony
