Picked up another Donald Byrd CD this week and it's Live in Paris. Nice concert w. Bobby Jasper,Walter Davis Jr., and Art Taylor.
Watkins gets featured alot and there is a nice blues w. Doug and Bobby Jasper on flute doing the melody in unison. The concert is from Oct of 1958 and the recording is very good.A nice study of a very consistant player who died way to young !!

Of course Doug worked w. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and he is on their first recordings including Horace Silvers and the Jazz Messengers[Blue note 1518]
The live at the Cafe Bohemia Vol.1 and 2 are classics included now on Cd w. extra tracks and Doug is featured on 'Whats New'.[Blue Notes 1507,1508]
I have him on some unissued stuff w. Red Garland on Prestige called "Rediscovered Masters".They play 'Blues in the Closet' and 'Mr.Wonderfull"
An old Boston label called Transition put out a disc under Dougs name called 'Watkins at Large' w. Hank Mobley,Donald Byrd,Kenny Burrell,Duke Jordon, and Art Taylor.Of course there is more such as the many Pepper Adams/Donald Byrd sides. |

I don't think it's his playing, but his sound. If I describe it, it would sound like a lot of other players from that era, yet somehow, the timbre of his note is like a fingerprint.
Anyone else feel this way?
