I just got the latest issue of Bass Player, and I see a very young woman (24) on the cover. Her name is Esperanza Spalding, and she is the youngest instructor at Berklee! Hey, one more person that makes me feel like I never done anything!
Esparanza and I were in the same "big band" at Mel Brown's Jazz Camp @ Western Oregon University about six years ago. She is an amazing and talented individual with a great personality if you ever get to meet her. A year or so she was covered in the "player profiles" which I thought was pretty awesome. I knew it was only a matter of time before she made it on the to the cover. She brings some very modern and unique styles to DB playing. You will find some threads about her if you do a search.

She is a great bassist but, man, she can sing her butt off too!!!!

While playing the bass at the same time! I saw her at the jazz fest last year. My wife and I brought her little brother (well he's 20) and his gf. They're more the ac/dc types but really dug Spalding. So much so that he wants to come back to the fest this year.

Theres an interview with her in the latest copy of Bass Guitar Magazine (the British one). Was quite disapointing really - no mention of her being a Berklee professor. They mostly just talk about her basses :/ The Bass Player article, on the other hand was fantastic. Her album / playing is amazing.
