I couldn't agree more with all the good things said about Esperanza. Upon hearing this clip, I was immediately reminded of this gal (from my more youthful days). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FS_Vl...eature=related
Cheers

I love the end of clip when Dave kisses her hand, and then she kisses his! Way to keep up with that lecherous old guy... whom I love of course. |

Fantastic!

Was at a gig the other night and a table setter for the catering company (who I know is not a jazz savvy listener), sees me unpacking my bass, walks over and asks, "Have you ever heard of Esperanza Spaulding?" So, I believe she has, as they say in the media: Traction. |

She talks about always singing when she practices, stuff like playing a scale and singing a third above the note she's playing or singing the scale in the opposite direction from what she's playing. I've been listening to her album and if you think the tune on Letterman was tough to play and sing check out her singing Body and Soul in 5/4 (and in Spanish). Plus she sings along with her solo. She's clearly got a very good grounding in afro-cuba music and compound time. ... and she's sexy as a mofo. |

And on top of being an excellent bass player... that girl can sing! It was an incredible show.
I haven't been listening to jazz that much lately, but after getting into Esperanza Spalding... I feel a serious need to get right back into it. I have a feeling that she's going to be really good for jazz music.

She is a very unique talent and when I first met her she played one of my basses because her neck was broken off her bass... With that big hair and her boppish type noodling she did that day I thought " Hmmmm... This is George Mraz meets the Mod Squad"
She has gotten super promo both from Berklee and her Agent ,so she is around good people. I wish her luck down in NY... Just as a Bassist I believe she will be around doing great things for the instrument. I have played some duets w. her and she is very inventive. As far as the other stuff, I hadn't heard her sing that much, but I liked her unique approach and think she will forge ahead in what ever musical situation she is in. |
