Question Favorite Young Bassists

Who are some young guys that are stirring up NYC and other places right now in Jazz/creative music on double bass? Who do we need to be listening to?

Andrew Lafkas is a great younger improvising bass player in NYC.

Thanks, Damon. Aside from Lafkas, is everyone in NY using older, known bass players? Are there any new McBrides or Grenadiers coming up in any bands?

I think John Hebert, Ben Street, Matt Brewer and Vicente Archer are all quite young. They're all great players.
In England Aiden O'Donnell is great and young, as are Phil Donkin, Dave Whitford, Sam Burgess.

There's room for all good bass players in New York... the old, the young, and everyone in between Come visit and find out for yourself.

I am hoping to visit NYC soon. I have family in Manhatten, so it's just a matter of planning a time and getting a plane ticket. I am sure it will change my life drastically....... in a good way.

I don't know how much they're stirring stuff up, but John Sullivan (with Roy Haynes) and Thomson Kneeland (with his own bands) are both great. And some guy named Marco Panascia has been sending my students into a frenzy with his youtube videos...

I can't remember his full name, but there's an Australian bassist named (I think) Matt something-or-other (something with a C) whom a bunch of trusted NY compadres have said is "everyone's new favorite bassist." Not so helpful, I know--maybe Marco knows of whom I speak?

I love Roy Haynes' band with John Sulivan and Robert Rodriquez.

Thomas Morgan and Eivind Opsvik are both pretty young players. I saw Thomas a couple months ago with Dave Binney, and just recently saw Eivind in Baltimore with Tony Malaby's Tone Collector. Both were very impressive players.

I'm surprised nobody has said Derrick Hodge. He's been on some pretty high profile records with Terrence Blanchard and Mulgrew.

Derrick is great, and the humblest cat, too... he actually lives in southern New Jersey (much closer to Philly). I am here in Philly tonight, playing with Eldar and Kendrick Scott. Kendrick is Derrick's bandmate in Terence Blanchard's group.

Man, there's just so many amazing bassists out there! It's really inspiring.

Chris Wood

Chris Wood is the funkiest cat I've ever seen in person. I really like the album he did with his brother called "Ways Not to Lose". It's some of the funkiest stuff I've ever heard on DB.

I saw them live at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI. Chris played with his brother then played with Medeski, Martin, & Wood.

I love many kinds of music. To my ears there is nothing better than funky grooves on a DB.

I wish I could find more guys to listen to who can lay down the funk like him.
