Spiritual Unity....his sound is freakin' huge!!!!!!!!!!

peacock's studio sound on "spiritual unity", the "tethered moon" cd's that ed mentioned & the (2) marilyn crispell cd's that i mention above...is freakin huge. so is his live sound...when you are in the house.

his sound on the 1993 "open theater east" dvd isn't bad,
but the majority of live jarrett trio cd's that ECM puts out,
typically miss gary's freakin huge sound.

the 2-2-08 trio concert @ njpac was pretty amazing.
songs like "last nite when we were young" "solar" &
"god bless the child" were extended & took on a life
of their own.

the live sound & balance was expectional, with keith
stating that njpac is "one of THE BEST halls"...anywhere.

gary's sound was about as good as live bass gets & his
playing, especially solos blew a bunch of us away. keith
stopped comping on "you belong to me" because he was
digging garys solo so much. gary had the hot hand this nite.

I've seen a glimpse...

I managed to get a couple of lessons with Gary. I hope for more, but he's expensive and I have a mortgage!

He's a huge advocate of ear training. Not just identifying the pitch, but the tone. In other words, he's into the dynamic nature of the notes he's playing. If you think about it, this movement is a huge (only?) important thing in music.

As for his playing on different recordings, I think they're representative of different times in his life. When he played with Miles, he was angry. He says that with Keith he's trying not to think at all, only reacting in the moment.

He's a nice man, but there's no B.S. at all. Basically, the harder you work, the more you'll discover, and that will be the story you tell.

He changed my musical life. After 10 years of playing, I consider the day I met Gary for the first time "Day Zero." I've re-thought everything since then. I try to listen to other bassists, but I keep coming back to his sound, approach, emotion...

Anyway, that's my brief Gary story.

If going back to the original subject.
Check up Clare Fischerīs debut LP recorded 1962 "First Time Out". Gene Stone at drums and Peacock playing bass. His original compostion to the memory of La Faro "Piece for Scotty" is nice.

RIP.

I only saw him play once, it was really joyous.

I had a bad feeling when I saw a post on what I knew was an old thread.

Gary Peacock

I first heard him on a wonderful album with Clare Fisher. I think it was called "First Time Out" (for Clare ?), probably Pacific Records. It got great reviews from "Downbeat' at the time and is still one of my favorite vinlys. I learned to play "Well You Needn't" from his version. We learned everything by ear at that time. No easy YouTube route at then Also, I think he worked with Bud Shank at that time, too.
I remember playing the 1964? KC Jazz festival with the Mike Ning Trio and how disappointed I was when I discovered that Clare Fisher, who was also on the bill, didn't bring Gary with him. He had the temerity to bring some slouch named Jimmy Bond instead

Fantastic recording here on Sunnyside. The boppish solo piece, "Workinoot" has been getting the most attention. Marvelous tone and feel.

Peacock is incredible, the only bad album he ever made was with Frizzle, but Frizzle ruined a trio with Elvin Jones and David Holland, as well, which kind of makes him a genius!

I love Peacock's duos with Ralph Towner and that weird LP with Markus Stockhausen, maybe my favorite is the beautiful trio with Bley and Franz Koglmann doing Annette Peacock tunes.

I'm glad that I am not the only one to feel the way Damonsmith does about Frizzel (Frizzle?). I just don't get it. But there must be something there if guys like Gary and David make records with him. Unless they are just rent-payers.
Funnily, I always think of the country star Lefty Frizzel when I hear his name. I wonder if they are related?
