Gonzalo Rubalcaba Quintet

The Portland Jazz Festival started yesterday.

I went to a late Jazz jam at the Green Onion at midnight last night.

Towards the end, the Gonzalo Rubalcaba Quintet got up and played a spontaneous 40-minute set. It was freakin' insane. I feel really lucky to have heard them at all, let alone at a spontaneous free show.

Gonzalo was playing ivory, starting with his bassist and drummer, who were not Matt Brewer and Marcus Gilmore. It started out abstract, melodic, and very bebop, and evolved gradually into hardcore, gorgeous Cuban grooves.

Then Mike Rodriguez and Yosvany Terry joined in towards the end, Mike on horn, and Yosvany playing a beer bottle with a spoon!

It was wicked.

Does anyone know who the bassist and drummer could be?

When you say towards the end it makes me think someone played after them. I can't image who would try that!

There is a bassist here on TBDB who used to play with GR, but I can't remember his login name. He's been playing with Wynton Marsalis more recently. Just goes to show that when you log in here you never quite know who someone might be.

Can't help you with the other players at the performance you saw though.

Do you mean Carlos Henriquez? He's the only poster that I know who has played with Wynton, I think his poster name is Bajo.

Great Latin Bassists

Yes, that's him... Another great bassist who plays latin music exceptionally well and is a TB member, (and had an Ampeg Baby Bass for sale on this forum), is Reuben Rodriguez.

Update:

It was Justin Brown on drums, and Yunior Terry (Yosvany's brother) on bass.
