How does Brian Bromberg get such a thick tone?

Hello everybody, this is my first post, although i've been a fan of the forum for awhile...

How does brian get a tone like that? I know his bass is quite old, but does anyone know what kind of strings/action/pickup he's using?

thanks,

Alex

Here's a link to a thread where Mr. Bromberg himself post's about his bass and how he achieves his tone.. Bromberg/Lemur
and another really good post by Brian..... Bromberg's "Wood II"

I'm not sure I'd describe his tone as thick, but I think the factors in his sound are:
1. an exceptional instrument
2. steel strings with low action
3. Brian Bromberg's hands

*a $9000 mic and $20,000 mic pre in a $1,000,000 studio shouldn't be discounted either, if you're talking about his tone on his cd's.

+ lots. Not my fave player, but has one of THE best recorded sounds you're gonna hear. It's impeccable, really warm & acoustic. Sometimes it's pretty high in the mix though and I think some folks attribute the mix to the bass tone itself.
