Jack Johnson Bassist?

Last night, I watched Ken Burns' documentary on Jack Johnson. (The 1st black heavyweight champion) They stated that he played double bass, and showed a picture of him with a bass, and a very heavy german bow in his hand. They also stated that he entertained friends and family with his playing. No mention was ever made of him playing with any band or orchestra. Does anyone out there know if he had any musical training, or if he actually knew how to play double bass, or was it just another one of his expensive toys.

Just curious,

I'm wondering how many of his contemporaries would have told him exactly what they thought of his playing...
