A point to ponder is that while lead instruments are playing the written melody, the bassist is composing a bass line to match the chord changes and melody. All bassists are composers (whether or not they write tunes or pieces). J.S. Bach is said to have started many compositions from the bass line. That's because it's the meat and potatoes of any piece. Bass players hear things from the ground up, and the good ones have an excellent penchant for melody and structure.
