John Goldsby on The Jazz Session #110

I am excited to see that in a few episodes, Jason Crane (of The Jazz Session Podcast), will be interviewing John Goldsby.

It's not up yet, but will be within a couple of weeks.

Jason's interviews have steadily turned me on to folks I wouldn't have necessarily checked out if it weren't for his show. Just when I say to myself, "who is this? Is it another singer? ", I am typically exposed to some really good music. Or at the very least, some good musical personalities.

Past episodes have featured other oft mentioned bass players, John Patitucci (Episode #84), Avery Sharpe (Episode #75), Christian McBride (Episode #69), Fly- Jeff Ballard, Larry Grenadier, Mark Turner (Episode #53).

"John's Fan Thread" and Francesco

John's new record is in my iTunes queue now.

In the meantime, I was struck by a couple of comments he made.

One was about some of his favorite bass players and their role within an ensemble. Additionally, how the role, as he describes it, is sometimes obscured by a growing tendency amongst newer players' desire to be a soloist. (It is much better to hear him speak it for himself in the interview before anybody might reply with their own opinions.)

Secondly, I thought it was cool the way he speaks to the tracks with Francesco Casifo as being a snapshot of what is likely a transitional period for the young virtuoso Alto player.

Here is a video of Franceso at last year's Umbria Jazz Festival (not sure who is in the band):

Thanks for posting this!! I think John is one of the most inspiring straight ahead bassists alive.
I played a gig just after listening to this and it was REALLY helpful. As weird and non-bass as I play I rarely take solos, I might play a solo concert but I rarely solo on the gig.
I really kept John's words in mind and the gig went well. I feel like I have always been trying to find new ways of playing bass in an ensemble, and this helped me clarify some of my ideas on the subject.

It was interesting he mentioned playing a lot of free music - I'd love to hear John in a free setting, that would be amazing! There are some great free players in Köln, my colleague Frank Gratkowski being one of them.
The tracks from his album were killing, I am getting it when my downloads refresh on emusic!
