Kristen Korb

A recent thread on bass playing females reminded me of Kristen Korb. She deserves more love here. A direct descendant of the Ray Brown lineage of players.

I met her last year at the Golden Gate Bass Camp. Very gracious, friendly and supportive. She coached me through some TP lines I was having trouble with and is also quite the educator. She got arco chops too.

Her version of "Don't Get Round Much Anymore" just slays me.

Anyways, clippage:

Oh, BTW: when she does Whirly Bird, the middle part is a long vocalese of a solo originally by Benny Carter or someone like that.

Next time someone tells me that they're too small to play bass I'm going to link them that video. Is she really small or is she just playing an immense bass?

She plays a nice sounding Morelli - large 3/4. Seems to have no problem with it, she puts in a lot of time on it - that practice thing.

Question

Good thing she's a strong player. That piano player needs some help on the tempo and the tune. (first clip).

He tries to go all modal on the "On Top Of The World" clip on the side menu.
Not Kristen at her best, because of that, IMO.

Korb has some great CDs out--can't remember the bass guitar players name, but he plays mean jazz lead on a six string bass, with Korb on upright--great easy listening. I downloaded them from i tunes.

Here's a video of Kristen and Todd Johnson . . . nice, musical playing from all parties.

Thumbs up

Nice.
I liked Todd's quote of "Sweet Georgia Brown" in his solo.
John, I always get this tune confused with "Cherry" (it's in a youtube clip with Scotty in his L.A. period with Rosalino, Kamuca, Feldman and Levy). Doncha hate when that happens?

EDIT: The drummer gets a nice feel in your clip too.
