Larry Grenadier

I just saw Brad Mehldau's trio, and wow, Larry is a beast. Fantastic playing and tone.

Brad and Jeff were killing too. I hadn't really heard any of the songs they played, I'm more familar with their older material. They did some free stuff too, I wasn't expecting that. Great show!

Anyone else a fan?

I'll add that he has the best intonation I've ever seen/heard. Seriously, it's perfect.

I like him with anyone, but his work with Brad Mehldau is my favorite. I like his approach to soloing.

Yeah, the Mehldau trio is absolutely incredible.
I just saw them on Friday... wow.

I really dig the Pat Metheny 99>00 album with Larry, and Day is Done from Mehldau.
His sound is always just beautiful.

my favorite recording of grenadier is him and mehldau playing duo in germany. larry is more adventurous than ever.
i just heard larry playing duo with his wife in nyc. rebecca sang and played guitar. the folky songwriting stuff. so beautiful. late night, great sound, quiet room, hardly anyone there, no jazzers. gotta love new york.

It's a bootleg recorded in Koln 04/28/99. Supposedly Jorge's wife was giving birth so he flew home.

Saw Larry play with Brad Mehldau last year. Great playing, very creative and inspiring to watch. He's #2 for my favorite DB players I've seen live.... Gary Peacock steals 1st place.

I'm pretty new to him, I only have a couple Mehldau records, and I've heard a track with him from the band Fly. I need to find some more albums with him, I absolutely love his playing.

That duo bootleg sounds really cool, anyone know where I can get it?

His ability to drive a tune while still being obtuse and creative in his grooves is what made me fall in love with his playing. His soloing is beautiful but I get more excited about how different players handle the bass player's chair. He has his own unique and personal way of holding it down.

Craig,
HOW do I get that? I've got a lot of Meldau/Larry, but never heard of it. Help me out.

Starting point?

Can someone recommend a good starting point for hearing Larry's work with the Mehldau trio?

I have heard bits and pieces and enjoyed it. I'm not a big Pat Metheney fan so I stayed away from that one.

Thanks.

Any of them really.
From the Art of the Trio, Vol 4. is especially good. "Trio Live" just came out two weeks ago and Grenadier sounds awesome.
I don't know if you're interested in him outside of the trio, but I love Joshua Redman's "Timeless Tales (for Changing Times)" and Peter Bernstein's "Heart's Content". Mehldau plays on both.

Art Of The Trio is the first one I heard. Nice. There's a bunch, though, and they're all good. Great piano trio.

The live Metheny CD is pretty interesting.... some of it will drive you nuts if you don't like that underwater PM sound, other parts are pretty surprising, like "Faith Healer".

I would be interested in hearing that bootleg as well...I have a bootleg of Larry (when he was 18) playing duo with Joe Henderson in S.Francisco and it's just awesome !
