Mike Stern & Jay Anderson

Hi guys,
does anybody happen to know the CD "STANDARDS AND OTHER SONGS" by Mike Stern?
There's a double bass player named Jay Anderson, who is that? He plays a solo on the Miles Davis tune "Nardis" that is just superb, nothing extreme fast or jaw dropping but just so logical and melodic - wonderful solo.
Does anybody know that player?
Could it be a "second name" for Jeff Andrews?
thanks a lot

Yes! Jay Anderson is Jay Anderson and Jeff Andrews is always Jeff Andrews. Please do a search for Jay's work. You will be impressed. I first met Jay quite a few years ago (like 25 or 30) when he played with Ira Sullivan and Red Rodney. I think Jeff Hirshfield was on drums and Gary Dial on piano (great rhythm section).

I don't think Jeff Andrews plays double bass.

Ahhhh...shame on me, just did a search - impressed?..I say YES.
I don't play upright but that solo is an all time favorite of mine. Did a transcription and learned it on the electric.
thanks a lot.

The bass player on "Nardis" is Larry Grenadier; Jay Anderson plays on most of the other tracks.

Jeff Andrews says he plays upright, but I have yet to hear it though.

I've been really enjoying Jay Anderson's playing recently on 3 different albums on the danish label 'Steeplechase'. he's on Lee Konitz and Paul Bley's 'out of nowhere', Paul Bley's 'Notes on Ornette' and Andy LaVerne's 'Pianissimo', all of which are great records, with beautifully played and beautifully recorded double bass.

So, Larry Grenadier is the guy I was listening to all those years. Kinda funny, I listened to that song and the solo for years and years without knowing who the player was, I never saw the CD booklet.
And...yes, I heard that Jeff Andrews plays upright, saw a picture of Vital Information once with Jeff playing (or pretending?) an upright.
thanks for the postings.

There's a great trio record on Steeplechase under Rich Perry's name (I think Jeff Hirschfield on drums?) with Jay on bass. Beautiful melodies in his palying....
