Hinton and Major Holley were two players known for singing along with bowed solos -- kind of like George Benson crossed with Fred Zimmerman ;> If I remember right, Hinton sang tenor and Holley sang baritone. Both were find old swingin' walkers and strong soloists 'back in the day.'

Hinton was also an avid photographer. Didn't he take that picture which was the subject of the movie "A Great Day in Harlem?"

Nope. That was Art Kane, art director for Esquire.

Milt was there, though, and of course he had his camera along. His wife took some 8mm home movies of the event as well. Footage is featured in the GDIH documentary.

As for Milt, it's difficult to say anything bad about his playing--didn't play bushels full of 16th notes, but he was a master of taste. I don't have a particular album that's a favorite, but it was fun to hear him on Branford Marsalis's "Trio Jeepy."

He was also a master slapper.

Milt did take a lot of photos for Great Day in Harlem.
I think it was Slam Stewart that hung with Major Holley.
