A new take on Scotty (Lafaro)

I have been a SL fan for many years but I really only heard him with Bill Evans. Upon the word of some Talk Bass folks I was able to find Scotty on the Hampton Haws CD and the Victor Feldman CD. Man, it is like rediscovering a whole new Scotty. He plays so wonderful with these cats. I have always heard him with the dark, sardonic Bill Evans and never really new that SL could be such a buoyant player. He really shines as a versatile player on these recordings. Thanks to TB for the info. I look forward to finding more such rare gems.

This is one that has somehow slipped thru my radar over the years, so I just went to ITunes and checked out the samples. Pretty much left my jaw hangin'. I like Scott's playing with Bill Evans a lot, but this is something else... just some of the greatest bass playing I've ever heard, recorded beautifully. Armybass, thanks for the headsup, I think I've found my next IPod purchase.

P.S. These Scotty threads always leave me a little bit sad, in the "what if" sense...

Whoa, part II

...and then I did the same with the Hampton Hawes tracks, with Harold Land.... damn, Scotty was comfy at uptempos, to say the least. Great stuff.

I've heard this album before, but somehow forgot that SL was on it.

Beat me up, Scotty!

So far I've only heard his records with Bill Evans and the Victor Feldman one. Thanks for reminding me to look up the LaFaro discography, armybass.

the hampton hawes album "for real!" is amazing stuff. he plays great on the whole thing, but i seem to remember I Love You sticking out to me.

if you haven't checked it out yet, i highly recommend the album "Ornette!" by Ornette Coleman. Yet another, rarely heard side of Scotty. A very different approach than Charlie Haden had to the band (Ornette, Don Cherry, and Ed Blackwell), but certainly some beautiful playing by all. His ostinato in the opening WRU fits perfectly with the group.

- I first heard that in an Ex Girlfriend's car nearly 10 years ago, I was thinking, "Wow, Haden sounds great, maybe I have to re-think how I feel about him". Then I went to the store to buy the LP and saw it was Lafaro.

Not to forget Free Jazz where he duels with Charlie Haden.
Shouldn't work but it does. Amazing textures.

This has been discussed in other threads around here - it's an amazing moment, when the rest of the group stop playing and you can just hear the two basses - after about half an hour!!

Oops!

Yeah, as luck would have it, I just started a new thread about all this SLF stuff. Incuding some of Marcus' "What if" stuff...check it out....i'd love to get alot of posts with some of all of our ideas and possibilities.

Army, I hope you aren't getting the vibe that i'm pirating your thread, what with my own new thread over on the BASSISTS forum heading.
If you are, I apologize.

People who think of SLF just as Bill Evans' bassplayer should check out all these other recordings: there is so much interesting and really totally different music. For example the recordings with Cal Tjader+Stand Getz Quintet ('58), or the live recording with Vic Feldman, Stand Levey and Richie Kamucka (tp) at the Lighthouse at Hermosa Beach ('58). And I really like "Too close for comfort" with the Marty Paich Orchestra ('59)
Some month ago, I recognized that I have the probably last recording of SLF in my CD shelf. It's a live recording of july, 3. 1961 with Steve Kuhn, Roy Haynes and Stan Getz at the Newport Jazz Festival (I haven't paid much attention on this Cd sampler for years, until I recognized that SLF is on it ... a real hidden treasure)
However, I like the BE trio recordings best
